00:00:02 When I come up with ideas, they'll just start from a very primal,
00:00:08 "I just want to seethis cute thing on screen,"
00:00:11 and then I'll find the meaningand the metaphor and the themes
00:00:14 to justify why it should be that.
00:00:17 But really, it just came from a placeof "Oh, they're so cute,"
00:00:20 and "Wouldn't it be awesomeif they were gigantic?"
00:00:25 I'm excited.
00:00:26 -What's the panda's name again?-RONA LIU: Tenzin.
00:00:28 And then the girl wasthe older one, right?
00:00:33 Didn't realize they'd be so small.
00:00:35 Real red pandas are really cute.
00:00:38 And I think that's the main reason whyI was drawn to making a story about them.
00:00:42 It's got kind of a belly sometimes.
00:00:44 They're very tubularand they have very long, fluffy tails,
00:00:48 more pointed snouts.
00:00:50 The tail's about 18 inches.
00:00:52 Oh.
00:00:54 They feel a little cat-like,kind of raccoon, kind of bear.
00:00:58 Maybe a little splashof monkey or something.
00:01:02 Look at it. Aw!
00:01:04 LINDSEY COLLINS: They're totally solitary.
00:01:06 They don't really communicatewith one another.
00:01:08 They're kind of like teenagers.
00:01:10 -I like the long...-That one's like an old one.
00:01:13 SHI: I found a lot of parallels
00:01:15 between red pandas and Meiand her story.
00:01:17 Like, red pandasare very attached to their mom.
00:01:21 They sleep all day.
00:01:22 They eat bamboo, but they're notsupposed to eat bamboo,
00:01:25 bamboo doesn't give themenough nutrients.
00:01:28 So I imagineit's just like a lazy teenager,
00:01:30 just eating chipsand sleeping all day.
00:01:32 They're native to China.
00:01:35 And then also, it's like red and white.
00:01:38 It's like Chinese, but also likethe colors of the Canadian flag, too.
00:01:42 So it felt like the perfect animal
00:01:45 to tell this story about thisChinese-Canadian teenage girl.
00:01:50 I'm Meilin Lee.
00:01:52 And ever since I turned 13,I've been doing my own thing.
00:01:55 Making my own moves, 24/7, 365.
00:01:59 Turning Red is about Mei,
00:02:02 a Chinese-Canadian girlliving in Toronto in 2002.
00:02:06 It's very specific.
00:02:07 It's a mother-daughter story.
00:02:09 At its most base level, this film is about growing up
00:02:13 and figuring out who you areand embracing that.
00:02:16 MING: Mei-Mei...
00:02:17 MEI: Coming!
00:02:20 SHI: Everything changes for Meiwhen she wakes up one morning
00:02:24 and discovers she's a giant,eight-foot-tall furry red panda,
00:02:29 and she realizes"Oh, I can control this transformation.
00:02:36 "If I just stay completely calmand even for the rest of my life,
00:02:41 "I will stay human and it'll be A-okay."
00:02:43 Yes.
00:02:47 But that's not how life works.
00:02:50 Oh, crap.
00:02:51 (EXCLAIMING)
00:02:52 Mom!
00:02:57 So the red panda is basicallya metaphor for magical puberty.
00:03:03 Just seeing how this girl
00:03:05 who thought she had everythingunder control,
00:03:07 suddenly big and hairy and smelly,
00:03:10 an emotional wreck. (LAUGHS)
00:03:12 4*TOWN forever?
00:03:14 COLLINS: This panda is incredibly cute.
00:03:17 It's also true to that timein a girl's life.
00:03:20 In some ways, it's the worst time.
00:03:22 You're not a kid,and you're not an adult.
00:03:26 This poor girl, she's looking in a mirror
00:03:28 and seeing thatshe's got hair everywhere and she stinks,
00:03:33 and she's bigand doesn't fit through the doorway.
00:03:36 FEINBERG: Panda Mei is onlyhalf in control.
00:03:38 She's having a great time,but then she's like "Auughhh."
00:03:42 And like, I don't know,
00:03:44 that feels very much likewhat my teenager years were like.
00:03:47 Ah OOGa!
00:03:48 LIU: It's bodily, it's emotional.
00:03:51 It's all about, "Can I embrace this?Can I grow into it?
00:03:56 "Can I still love who I am
00:03:59 "knowing that I've become someonethat I'm not used to?"
00:04:03 SHI: It's all going according to plan.COLLINS: This is about right.
00:04:06 LIU: It's the first time in my career
00:04:09 where all of the key leadershipon the show are women,
00:04:13 and I feel likethat sets a very different vibe.
00:04:16 It's completely amazing
00:04:18 to have this all-women leadership team.
00:04:21 I have spent the entiretyof my career in meetings
00:04:25 where I was one of very few women.
00:04:27 Now sitting there and making plansand it's all women in the room
00:04:31 has been this really crazy thingand very different for me.
00:04:34 Everything's differentabout this film.
00:04:36 I don't know how to answer that questionwithout starting with Domee.
00:04:39 -She's a good girl. Just like I was.-(ALL LAUGHING)
00:04:42 I first heard of Domee
00:04:44 through seeing one of herten-second animation clips.
00:04:49 I was in college, and it was somethingthat she posted on her blog.
00:04:54 (UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING)
00:04:58 It was this dancing, twerking hamsterto a K-pop song.
00:05:07 "Who is this girl?
00:05:08 "She's probably going to bea really funny director one day."
00:05:14 When I first started this movie,
00:05:16 I was really determinedto make something different.
00:05:19 We're going to be spendingfour or five years of our life on this,
00:05:23 we've got to go big.
00:05:25 I'm Domee Shi,the director of Red,
00:05:27 and ever since we startedmaking this movie,
00:05:29 we've been breaking conventionand making people laugh 24/7, 365.
00:05:35 Ah, legally, it's nine-to-five, 261.
00:05:40 Whoo!
00:05:41 SHI: On this show,we wear what we want,
00:05:43 say what we want,
00:05:44 and we will not hesitateto do spontaneous cartwheels
00:05:47 if we feel so moved.
00:05:48 Domee is a force of nature.
00:05:50 She is a first-time feature director.
00:05:53 It's been a while since I've workedwith a first-time director before,
00:05:56 and I'm loving it.
00:05:57 In conclusion, welcome to Red!
00:06:00 (ALL CHEERING)
00:06:04 SHI: Lights? Pitch.
00:06:08 Did that actually change anything?Yes, it did.
00:06:10 -So, welcome, everyone.-Just ignore the camera, everyone.
00:06:15 -It's not there.-Don't look right here. (LAUGHS)
00:06:19 SHI: Making the film,it's just been like a long marathon.
00:06:23 But in the first couple of years,it was mostly me,
00:06:26 and Julia, our screenwriter,
00:06:29 head of story, Rosie Sullivan,
00:06:32 the story team, and then Nick, our editor.
00:06:35 And we were just workingon the reels.
00:06:38 Yeah, it feels likeyou're part of a pirate ship.
00:06:43 Because you're all kind of just workingand sweating for these drawings,
00:06:48 and you're all aiming to makethe director react or respond.
00:06:53 (ALL LAUGHING)
00:06:57 I started working with her,and pretty quickly,
00:07:00 I felt like this womanis really impressive.
00:07:04 Also, incredibly clear in her vision.
00:07:07 SHI: And then ta-da, and like,
00:07:08 imagine it to looklike a comic book background.
00:07:12 Thank you, Margaret.Great work.
00:07:14 (ALL APPLAUDING)
00:07:17 She is so uniquein how she thinks about movies,
00:07:19 how she communicates her vision,
00:07:21 her humor, her tone.
00:07:23 I just thought I'd get this in front ofyou to see if it lives within our world.
00:07:27 -Is that what we're looking for?-Yes. Yes. Sorry.
00:07:29 (ALL LAUGHING)
00:07:31 I feel like I have to be moreof a director now for the camera.
00:07:34 The crew slowly grew bigger and bigger.
00:07:37 To give you a general senseof the BG buildings.
00:07:40 This reminds me of Toronto a lot,a lot of these old buildings.
00:07:44 And then last year,it just exploded.
00:07:48 And that was duringthe pandemic. (CHUCKLES)
00:07:51 It just so happens that
00:07:52 the busiest time on the showwas when we were all working from home.
00:07:56 FEINBERG: Hi, Frankie. Hi, bubba.
00:08:00 It may not be obvious, I don't know,
00:08:02 but making films is a huge team effort,
00:08:05 and so, the more you can collaboratewith the people around you,
00:08:09 the better the movie is going to be.
00:08:12 As we were leaving to walk outthe door for getting sent home,
00:08:16 Domee said, "Well, maybe I could dolike a coffee time or something
00:08:21 "just so we can keepin touch with the crew.
00:08:23 And we all went, "Oh, what a great idea."
00:08:26 And in the beginning, it really was
00:08:28 kind of this awesome thingof just being able to see
00:08:30 more than like three people in your life.
00:08:33 And also getting to hear fromthe director weekly is pretty cool.
00:08:36 ...Mei's struggle throughout act two...
00:08:39 Even if sometimesit's just a little update,
00:08:41 it felt like some kind of connection.
00:08:44 We are starting with a couple ofnominations from our dailies team.
00:08:50 I've been really surprised
00:08:51 because we routinely get a hundredand something people coming to it.
00:08:56 (SINGING A BAD RENDITIONOF HAPPY BIRTHDAY)
00:08:59 Oh! Thank you!
00:09:02 Exceptionally bad and so out of key.But I really love it.
00:09:07 Here's to a better 2021.
00:09:09 FEINBERG: We're coming together in some ofthe best way you can do during a pandemic
00:09:13 with a giant movie crew,so it's been pretty cool.
00:09:16 (PLAYING FESTIVE MUSIC)
00:09:25 FEINBERG: My job is Visual EffectsSupervisor on the film.
00:09:29 First woman in 20 years at Pixarto have that job.
00:09:32 For almost 15 years,I was a lighting DP,
00:09:35 and so most of my career at Pixarhas been about lighting,
00:09:38 thinking about how to makethe most beautiful movie possible,
00:09:41 how to make a great experiencefor the lighting team...
00:09:44 A little bit of this, even though that would catch the light.
00:09:46 How to engage with the director,
00:09:48 how to coordinate with other departments, how to do groundbreaking stuff.
00:09:51 And now I'm in this new role,
00:09:53 overseeing heavily techand some of the creative,
00:09:56 and I am now in the leadership groupof running the movie.
00:09:59 (BABY BABBLING)
00:10:02 And then at the same time,I became a mother for the first time.
00:10:06 I have twins, a boy and a girl.
00:10:09 Ah!
00:10:11 I don't know that I ever thoughtI was going to have kids.
00:10:15 You know, there's days where it feelscompletely overwhelming, I would say.
00:10:19 CHILD: Yay!FEINBERG: Yay!
00:10:25 But I also am now a year and a halfinto being a mother.
00:10:32 And I'm two years into this position.
00:10:36 I love both things dearly, and it's hardto imagine not having them now.
00:10:42 And I got married to my amazing wife.
00:10:46 -Hello.-PAIGE: Hello.
00:10:47 You guys, it's Mommy!
00:10:50 Hi, guys.
00:10:53 FEINBERG: Paige is a battalion chieffor the Alameda County Fire Department.
00:10:57 She's the highest ranking womanof that department,
00:11:00 which I'm neverendingly proud about.
00:11:02 She would not love that I'm braggingabout her, but I love to brag about her.
00:11:05 It's one of my favorite topics.
00:11:08 Are you gonna be ableto jump into the end credit?
00:11:11 We're moving it up to 2:30, I think.
00:11:13 This is Lindsey Collins. She is the producer of Turning Red.
00:11:17 The producer is the one orchestratingthis giant circus.
00:11:21 -The ringmaster?-She is the ringmaster.
00:11:25 When people are going "Auggghhh"Lindsey is like, "Okay, let's make a plan.
00:11:30 "Let's figure outhow to make this happen."
00:11:32 So in the race to get this done,
00:11:33 we're probably just going to be workingon top of each other, which is great.
00:11:37 Lindsey is so smart, I think she'salways like a million steps ahead,
00:11:40 so that I can worry aboutwhat's happening in the present.
00:11:44 I'm really good at workingwithin boxes and limitations
00:11:48 and she was really good aboutdrawing them out for me
00:11:52 to be crazy and push up against.
00:11:54 Just to draw the storyline togethermaybe a little bit clearer...
00:11:58 I feel like I learned so much just bywatching her and working with her
00:12:02 and I see it as the partnerto the director.
00:12:04 So that includes being a creative partner, but also managing the crew
00:12:09 and surrounding herwith all the right people.
00:12:11 LIU: You're in every meeting,
00:12:13 you always offer waysto move story along
00:12:17 and you help production through, not just by managing it,
00:12:22 but also just from an emotional, creative side as well.
00:12:26 -You do.-Thank you, Rona.
00:12:27 I kind of like it when...
00:12:29 COLLINS: This is Rona Liu.
00:12:30 She's the production designerof Turning Red.
00:12:33 The production designeris the first person brought on the show
00:12:38 after the producer and director.
00:12:40 You know, we're talking about the valuesbeing super, super crunched.
00:12:43 COLLINS: And that's basically becausefrom the very beginning,
00:12:46 their job is to figure outwhat the movie is going to look like.
00:12:49 And that is everything from charactersto sets to color to tone and style.
00:12:55 LIU: My role is to collaborateclosely with the director,
00:12:58 and make sure that her vision translates
00:13:01 throughout all of the departmentand onto the screen.
00:13:05 EMMA ON COMPUTER: Welcome, everyone.
00:13:06 Today, we're going to kick it off
00:13:08 with Athena and the pandacostume shaping.
00:13:12 For her tail,
00:13:13 the lighter partcan take on some of that red.
00:13:16 I know I'm providing information thatother people need to get their work done.
00:13:21 Let's tone the two sideswhere there is the star and the heart.
00:13:26 I feel like that's the most importantpart of my job, is to just make sure
00:13:30 that everybody else feels goodabout the work that they're doing.
00:13:34 Okay.
00:13:35 SHI: Good job, everyone. Thank you.
00:13:37 -Thank you. Bye.-Thanks.
00:13:42 LIU: Being pregnant while we'rein the crunch of things
00:13:44 definitely made me have to justtrust my team a lot more.
00:13:48 It's the first time in my life
00:13:50 where I was comfortabletelling my manager, Sophia,
00:13:53 I need to take some time to nap.
00:13:56 So that does make sense.
00:13:58 Hey, Rona, where are we?
00:14:00 We're in the living room area.
00:14:03 This is the entrance to our house.
00:14:05 This is our kitty.
00:14:08 And this is my soon-to-be-husband.
00:14:10 -We're getting Zoom-married on Friday.-Mmm-hmm.
00:14:13 We've been engaged for so long,we figured now's a good time to do it.
00:14:17 -Yeah.-(BOTH LAUGHING)
00:14:23 LIU: Being able to step away,
00:14:24 touch base with a loved oneand to say, "Hey, how's your day going?"
00:14:29 and just being really connectedin both of our lives for the first time,
00:14:34 that's been really comforting.
00:14:41 I'm an only child,
00:14:42 and my dad had to go away to work a lot.
00:14:45 So a lot of the time,it was just me and my mom.
00:14:49 We'd go on Chinese bus tours.
00:14:54 Like she'd pick the locations.
00:14:56 And she would take us to Atlanta,
00:14:59 or Halifax,
00:15:01 Prince Edward Island.
00:15:02 Maybe not like, upfront, the most exciting places,
00:15:06 but we would spend a good ton of timejust together on the bus talking.
00:15:10 It was good at first,
00:15:12 but like everybody, you grow up and you change
00:15:15 and you want to have your own friendsand your own life,
00:15:18 and it's kind of just abouthow that transition happens.
00:15:24 I love the lighting.
00:15:26 I love everything in this sequence.
00:15:28 Great work, you guys.
00:15:29 (SCHOOL BELL RINGS)
00:15:32 It's been a long timesince I was 13.
00:15:35 But I just remember it beinga lot of highs and lows.
00:15:38 It's such a turbulent timein a person's life,
00:15:42 especially a girl's, I think.
00:15:44 Small things can feelsuper, super important,
00:15:47 and you could love somethingone day and hate it the other.
00:15:51 MEI: I didn't even like 4*TOWN last year,
00:15:53 but now they're literallythe greatest thing
00:15:56 that's ever happened to me.
00:15:57 This film is very personalto me in that
00:16:01 it was very much inspired by my own lifegrowing up in Toronto
00:16:05 and being the only childof my overprotective mom and dad. (LAUGHS)
00:16:12 We are about to hop ontoa Zoom call with my parents
00:16:15 and they are going to dig throughall of the artwork and things
00:16:19 that I've ever created in my life.
00:16:21 They've collected all of it.
00:16:23 Yeah, everything. Everything.
00:16:24 It's my parents!
00:16:26 Hi!
00:16:28 (SHI'S FATHER SPEAKING MANDARIN)
00:16:30 How's it going? Is it weird havinga whole camera crew in the house?
00:16:37 SHI: They live in Toronto, Canada.
00:16:39 Still in the same housethat I grew up in,
00:16:43 pretty much looks exactly the sameevery time I go back.
00:16:50 Yeah. And then you replied as Santa Claus.
00:16:59 -Why would Santa Claus ever say that?-(BOTH LAUGHING)
00:17:10 She wrote a table of contents,a foreword.
00:17:14 Can you read some of your foreword?
00:17:25 So my dad would be like my art tutor,
00:17:28 but my mom would encouragemy writing.
00:17:30 (SHI'S FATHER SPEAKING)
00:17:38 Aw, the Wi-Fi sucks.
00:17:42 He's saying nice things about me,and I can't hear it.
00:17:44 He's never this generous with his praise.Come on!
00:17:47 (SHI'S MOTHER SPEAKING)
00:17:50 Yeah. Why is it... It's so big.
00:17:52 In the living room,
00:17:53 there's like an ever-growing shrinededicated to me.
00:17:58 It looks like they really love me
00:18:00 and that I'm dead or something. (CHUCKLES)
00:18:09 Yeah, I remember the judge.
00:18:11 I heard you guys collectedall of my sketchbooks.
00:18:14 Let's look through them together.
00:18:17 -Pok茅mon.-Yeah, Pok茅mon.
00:18:18 That's middle school.
00:18:20 And then high school is when I starteddrawing a lot of beautiful people.
00:18:24 It's boys. If there's boys,then it's close to high school.
00:18:28 -(SHI'S MOTHER SPEAKING)-Oh, my God. (LAUGHS)
00:18:32 This is so embarrassing.
00:18:34 There was this fan art contestthat I entered,
00:18:36 where it's likedraw Draco's children.
00:18:40 Okay, maybe we can lookat another sketchbook.
00:18:43 (LAUGHS)
00:18:45 Mmm. Devon.
00:18:47 Ugh! May I remind youwhat real men look like?
00:18:50 4*TOWN!
00:18:54 SHI: There's just so much comedyin female adolescence
00:18:58 that I don't see a lot of,and I just can't wait to show people
00:19:01 just how weird girls can be,
00:19:05 because I was totally that as a teen
00:19:08 and a young adult and now. (LAUGHS)
00:19:11 I love how Mei is just a confident dork,
00:19:16 (LAUGHS) and she's unapologetic about it.
00:19:19 I feel like she was the girlthat I wanted to be.
00:19:22 There's so many elements of me in Mei.
00:19:26 Spunky, loud, doesn't care what anyone thinks.
00:19:32 I accept and embrace all labels.
00:19:33 Even though I was a total nerd.
00:19:36 I was so oblivious to that, and I think that helped me.
00:19:39 LIU: She herselfnever questions who she is,
00:19:42 and I think she fightswhat is expected of her.
00:19:46 But deep down, she always knew who she was,
00:19:49 and she was alwaysso accepting of herself.
00:19:53 I remember being that at some point, and then, you know, hitting that age
00:19:57 and then suddenly turning very, very shywhen I got acne. And then I was
00:20:01 very aware of my body and all that stuff, and that's what I wanted to explore,
00:20:06 with Mei turning into a red panda.
00:20:10 She's this girlthat has her life together,
00:20:12 and then all of a sudden, magical puberty hits.
00:20:15 It's going to be okay.
00:20:16 No, it's not! Will you just get out?
00:20:18 Excuse me?
00:20:20 Are you serious?
00:20:23 SHI: For Mei, I really wanted herto sound unique.
00:20:27 I wanted her to feel like a real girl.
00:20:30 Oh, my gosh, that was the best thing ever.
00:20:33 SHI: And so we found Rosalie Chiang.
00:20:35 It's like you feel bad aboutturning her down because she's your mom.
00:20:39 She just had this really great voice.
00:20:41 There was just likea charming imperfection to it.
00:20:45 LIU: For Mei, it was important todesign her the way that we saw ourselves.
00:20:51 Her face is round, her ankles are thick.
00:20:54 We definitely embraced her chunky cute.
00:20:58 It's kind of our design aestheticfor our characters and for our sets.
00:21:03 We were looking at each other's facesand were like, "We got moles.
00:21:06 "She should have moles."
00:21:07 -Then you're like, "Rona, you have..."-"You have funny lips."
00:21:10 "You have that dip in your lip.Let's put that in.
00:21:14 BOTH: "Hey, Rona, you have really patchy eyebrows."
00:21:18 When that part of myself gets celebratedand the director's like,
00:21:22 "Hey, I like that.Let's put it in our main character,"
00:21:25 you're like,"Hey, why did I hate that for so long?"
00:21:28 Jin. Jin! It's happening!
00:21:33 What are you doing?
00:21:35 COLLINS: For me, this story is so muchmy day-to-day life.
00:21:41 I hate to admit, I'm much more the mom
00:21:43 than the main character because I actuallyhave three kids who are teens.
00:21:48 I am surrounded by teenagersand hormones and puberty at work.
00:21:53 And then I go home, and I am equally, if not more,
00:21:56 surrounded by pubertyand hormones at home.
00:21:59 Are you guys going to walk the dog?
00:22:02 Will you take them togetheror are you gonna take them separate?
00:22:07 Bye. Thank you.
00:22:08 They've been very well-behaved.
00:22:10 (LAUGHS) It does not normallygo that smoothly.
00:22:15 MEI: The number one rule in my family?Honor your parents.
00:22:22 They're the supreme beingswho gave you life...
00:22:24 The least you can do in return is...
00:22:26 every single thing they ask.
00:22:30 I think both of us probably grew upunder a lot of pressure
00:22:33 -to, you know, make our parents proud.-Yeah.
00:22:36 I had that pressure on myself.
00:22:37 Like, I was very high-strung.
00:22:40 I was really into good grades.
00:22:42 I was into the image of the perfect girl.
00:22:47 I never ask for anything.
00:22:48 My whole life I've been her perfectlittle Mei-Mei. Temple duties, grades...
00:22:53 -Violin!-Tap dancing.
00:22:54 Yeah. We've been so good.
00:22:57 If they don't trust us anyway, then what's the point?
00:23:00 SHI: Mei's struggle in this film is
00:23:02 she's torn between being her mom'sgood little daughter,
00:23:06 and embracing her wild inner beast.
00:23:13 That is the universal strugglethat a lot of kids go through,
00:23:16 especially, I think, immigrant kids, there's definitely more of this obligation
00:23:21 to carry on your family's legacyand make sure that their sacrifices
00:23:27 in coming to a new country aren't in vain. But also, you're in a new country,
00:23:31 you're experiencing all of thiscrazy, awesome stuff
00:23:34 that maybe your parentsdidn't get to grow up with.
00:23:38 You're caught between two worlds,
00:23:40 and that's kind ofwhat I wanted to explore in Mei
00:23:42 and also, like, literally caught betweenbeing like a human girl and a panda.
00:23:48 LIU: I immigrated to the U.S.when I was 10,
00:23:51 and my momis very much in her Eastern roots.
00:23:56 And when I came here, you know,
00:23:58 I was the good little Chinese girlthat I knew how to be,
00:24:02 and then as I get more and more exposedto the Western culture
00:24:06 and what it meansto be an American teenager,
00:24:10 my mom and I started to butt heads.
00:24:12 I had to discoverhow to bridge the gap
00:24:18 between being a dutiful daughter,
00:24:21 faithful to myself, and a good friend.
00:24:26 In eighth grade,I met my best friend, Aya Alaadel.
00:24:30 She really taught me
00:24:33 -that girls can burp the alphabet.-(BURPING)
00:24:40 Girls can want to play video games.
00:24:43 If you trip and you fall on your face, you can learn to laugh at yourself.
00:24:47 You don't have to be embarrassedfor your decisions,
00:24:50 for your mistakes, for who you are.
00:24:53 She really opened my eyes to all of that.
00:24:57 This is Bao.
00:24:59 -This is...-Your first baby.
00:25:01 -Our first baby.-Our first.
00:25:03 Our first baby.
00:25:06 Rona designedthis cute little nose for him.
00:25:09 Used our own noses.
00:25:10 -You look like your mother.-(LAUGHS)
00:25:13 SHI: I had this short filmthat I was developing, that became Bao,
00:25:17 and Rona was one of the first peoplethat I roped into the story.
00:25:21 I was like, "Dang, she can really paintand she has really good taste
00:25:24 "and she seems really cool."
00:25:26 "I really need an art personto like take this to the next level."
00:25:30 To be honest, I will follow youto the ends of the Earth.
00:25:34 I think Domee is justa brilliant, brilliant mind.
00:25:37 I just feel like we clickand we can be so open
00:25:41 in communicating with each other.
00:25:43 We're different enoughin certain areas of our tastes
00:25:48 that we can collaborate and createsomething even better together
00:25:51 than if we worked on something separately.
00:25:56 Hey, Bart. Hey, Lisa.
00:25:58 LIU: In the movie, Mei and her familyown and take care of a family temple.
00:26:04 We took several trips
00:26:06 to different historic templesaround California
00:26:10 that were built by early Chinese settlers
00:26:13 just to get a feelingof what these grassroots temples are like.
00:26:18 SHI: I also spent time living behinda temple with my grandma in China,
00:26:22 and I just rememberit being just a really lovely memory.
00:26:28 I'd make candles, and we would sell themto visitors of the temples.
00:26:33 And I'd learned how to pray properlywith my grandma.
00:26:38 When we got to building the setof the temple and dressing it,
00:26:43 it was really cool seeing those detailsthat we saw at the temples
00:26:47 kind of pop up in the background.
00:26:49 Like, there's just a bottleof vegetable oil.
00:26:52 Like, cleaning suppliestucked away in the corner.
00:26:56 They've been aroundsince the Gold Rush era.
00:26:58 All these immigrantswho came with so little
00:27:01 were able to cobble togethera little piece of home.
00:27:04 That kind of felt likethe immigrant spirit.
00:27:06 That kind of felt like me and Rona,
00:27:08 and how we, in our art,
00:27:10 we are inspiredby Eastern and Western stuff.
00:27:14 Should we try to match their face shapes? You know, like a bell shape?
00:27:18 I remember you saying,"Rona, this is not a Chinese film.
00:27:21 "This is a coming of age film,
00:27:24 "but it just happens to beabout a Chinese girl."
00:27:29 We need to really tap into the mindof a 13-year-old growing up in 2002,
00:27:34 growing up in Toronto.
00:27:37 -What did we like when we were 13.-Yeah.
00:27:40 And we liked Sailor Moon.We liked anime.
00:27:45 The fandoms are what got mereally into anime.
00:27:49 I was drawing fan art passionately.I had a secret sketchbook.
00:27:53 You join an online community, you draw fan art,
00:27:57 and other peoplewould comment on it,
00:27:59 and that would encourage youto draw more, produce more.
00:28:02 And that's kind of just whatencouraged me to keep drawing.
00:28:06 I think, as a kid,it was such an escape.
00:28:09 I know I'm Asian,but I'm in a very white school.
00:28:13 It kind of was nice to be connectedto that Asian side of myself.
00:28:17 I didn't have a boyfriend,
00:28:19 so then it's nice to readabout boyfriends.
00:28:21 Yeah, and a lot of them are drawnand written by women too.
00:28:24 There was a lot of stories toldfrom a girl's point of view,
00:28:27 and they're the heroes,
00:28:29 they save the dayor they change the hearts of all the boys
00:28:34 -and make them fall for her.-(BOTH LAUGH)
00:28:36 This is my house. This is my boyfriend, Darren.
00:28:43 My many game consoles.
00:28:46 I've been using theseto de-stress over quarantine.
00:28:50 This is this awesomeMiyazaki art book I got
00:28:56 about the Ghibli Museum.
00:28:58 I got this rug over quarantine.
00:29:01 Diane really likes this rug.
00:29:03 Where's Diane? Diane?
00:29:05 Don't be scared, don't be scared.
00:29:07 Don't be scared. Come over here.
00:29:09 I got you!
00:29:10 She'll come out, she's shy.
00:29:12 I think I'm craving even more speed
00:29:15 as she poofs into a pandaand shoots forward.
00:29:18 We're paying homage to animethroughout the entire movie.
00:29:22 You can see it in the expressionsand the acting,
00:29:26 the starry eyes in Mei
00:29:28 when she sees a boythat she really, really loves.
00:29:32 Uh, Mei?
00:29:33 Why are you staringat Carter Murphy-Mayhew?
00:29:35 We definitely have a lot of expertiseon the movie
00:29:37 about being 13-year-old girls,for sure.
00:29:40 There is definitelya lived experience there
00:29:43 that we get to bringto the movie-making,
00:29:46 maybe in a different way
00:29:47 than I would have been able to,say on a movie like WALL鈥. (LAUGHS)
00:29:53 That scene with Meigoing under the bed,
00:29:55 and all of a suddenshe's sort of gripped by things,
00:29:58 and she's drawing these sexy picturesand the conflict there
00:30:02 and "Why did I draw those things?"
00:30:04 I mean, I wasn'tunder my bed drawing things,
00:30:06 but when I was 11,I had a little wooden clothes pin,
00:30:10 and I had this mad crush on this womanthat was older than me,
00:30:14 but I did not knowthat I was gay at the time.
00:30:18 And I remember drawing her name
00:30:20 on the clothes pinand then flipping it over.
00:30:22 And she played a sportso I put her number down,
00:30:25 and that sat on my deskand I would look at it sometimes.
00:30:28 You know, these things, these silly things you do.
00:30:31 I definitely get what Mei is doing.
00:30:34 (LAUGHS)
00:30:36 From the side, would it look like this?
00:30:38 Did you know that I was like,"Oh, my God, am I ready?"
00:30:41 -To be a production designer?-Yeah. "Will I be good?"
00:30:44 We both did it on a short. But you're a first time feature...
00:30:49 I will be a first-timefeature production designer.
00:30:51 I figured because I was nervousabout directing for the first time
00:30:55 that you would be nervousabout production designing,
00:30:58 but I naively thought,
00:31:00 "How much harder could it bedirecting a feature?"
00:31:04 I was really scared, honestly,at the beginning.
00:31:08 I mean, you know,Domee was intimidating, right?
00:31:11 I mean, she's... Seriously, you were, like, super talented and...
00:31:14 I'm gonna be a diva.
00:31:15 -No, I was never worried about that.-(LAUGHS)
00:31:17 It was good, too,
00:31:18 because you also made me,kind of having done this for a while,
00:31:21 you questioned thingsthat I hadn't questioned in a while.
00:31:26 So I started in May of '97at Pixar on A Bug's Life.
00:31:32 I had worked in traditional animation,
00:31:34 but at the time, CG animationwas a completely different ball game.
00:31:37 I just remember I would have this notepadand I would just write down questions.
00:31:42 I was like, "Is the render farm a zoo?
00:31:44 "What's a cookie?Can I have a cookie?"
00:31:45 They're like, "No. You cannot."A cookie is not a cookie.
00:31:48 It was kind of like,"Here we go, welcome to my questions."
00:31:53 Danielle was definitelysomebody that I sought out,
00:31:55 as she would not judge you and give youa nice, clear and concise answer.
00:31:59 When we export act three,
00:32:02 is there a way to do onethat just has music...
00:32:06 One of the thingsI love most about Pixar
00:32:08 is that I'm still asking questions
00:32:11 with the same amount of freedom and safetyas I did on the first day I got here.
00:32:16 It's just a philosophy that I've kept.
00:32:18 It's something I encourage other peopleto do as they're starting on something.
00:32:22 If you don't know,
00:32:23 you're probably not the only onein the room who doesn't know, so ask.
00:32:26 We basically started these this morning.
00:32:28 So be gentle.
00:32:32 A little bit before I was askedto be the DP on WALL鈥,
00:32:36 I thought, "I don't knowif I could ever be a DP,
00:32:39 "maybe like in 10 or 15 years."
00:32:41 MAN: Wow, that's great.
00:32:43 This one we lit in five minutes. (LAUGHS)
00:32:46 And then Andrew Stantonasked me to be the DP on WALL鈥,
00:32:50 and I was terrified because I didn't thinkI knew how to do that at all.
00:32:54 COLLINS: I think we bothcredit Andrew to a big degree, frankly.
00:32:58 We both had this encouragementneither one of us would have asked for
00:33:03 until he kind of said,"No, I want you to come do this."
00:33:06 It was an amazing experience.
00:33:07 It was also, half the time, terrifying
00:33:10 of just trying to figure outhow to hang on to who I was
00:33:14 and make it through,
00:33:16 even though a lot of times I felt likeI didn't know what I was doing.
00:33:22 But what we then decided to do
00:33:24 is some look stuff that's sort of like,
00:33:26 "How do we get out of the Pixar look? How do we get into some new thing?"
00:33:31 We were trying to pushthe boundaries of style
00:33:34 in both storytelling, in the camera,
00:33:36 the look of things,
00:33:38 using some hand-drawn elements,
00:33:40 but then you sprinkle inAsian art influences.
00:33:44 It's been so interestingto take those pieces
00:33:46 and figure out how you can apply themto a 3D computer-animated film.
00:33:52 For me, I really wanted to bea VFX supervisor
00:33:56 that was making surethat people had the room
00:33:59 to bring their very best.
00:34:00 Not telling people what to do
00:34:02 but making space for them to shine.
00:34:04 And I have to say, honestly,a lot of that has started with Rona
00:34:08 because she is the mostcollaborative production designer
00:34:11 I have ever worked with, far and away.
00:34:13 I think it's madea huge difference to the movie
00:34:16 and to people's enjoymentof making the movie.
00:34:20 And this is the trustand the confidence I gain.
00:34:23 (BOTH LAUGH)
00:34:25 This isn't just our first concert.
00:34:28 This is our first step into womanhood.
00:34:31 And we have to do it together.
00:34:34 SHI: Mei's friends areMiriam, Abby, and Priya.
00:34:38 And they're her dork squad.
00:34:41 They accept her no matter what.
00:34:44 Red panda or no panda.
00:34:46 I always saw that as a metaphorfor when I found my squad.
00:34:50 4*TOWN, here we come!
00:34:53 I love that Meihas these key friendships.
00:34:56 I very much am that person myself.
00:34:59 I always was the kid who hadtwo or three best friends.
00:35:03 Those kind of quirky, dorky peoplewho made you laugh,
00:35:06 equally insecureabout what was going on.
00:35:10 And in high school,we'd get invited to the party
00:35:13 and we'd be like, "Okay, cool."
00:35:15 And then we drive over to the partyand we'd sit outside for a minute,
00:35:19 and then we were like,"Let's go get a cake."
00:35:23 Then we'd eat a cake, like a whole cake,in the car, and then go home.
00:35:29 It was about friendsthat listen to that moment
00:35:32 when you were like,"I'm not comfortable going in.
00:35:34 "I'm not confident enoughto do this,
00:35:36 "and all I really want to dois go hang out with you guys."
00:35:40 SHI: Hi. Sorry I'm late.
00:35:44 Figuring outhow to be comfortable in the room
00:35:46 and finding my voice took a while.
00:35:49 When I first started,I was definitely more nervous.
00:35:52 I was one of the few womenin the story department.
00:35:56 What helped a lot for me
00:35:58 was a female story artists support group
00:36:00 called the Story Artistas,
00:36:02 led by Mary Coleman, and Nicole Grindle.
00:36:06 They were like,"I want you guys to get comfortable,"
00:36:09 like, stating out loudwhat your goals are.
00:36:12 And I think there was one lunchwhere I meekly said out loud,
00:36:15 "I want to be a director." Oh!
00:36:18 Cool. Yeah, really feeling that anger.
00:36:21 She's like launching herself up,"Sorry, I'm not..."
00:36:24 You could play Minga little bit more in slo-mo as well.
00:36:27 -Yeah.-Otherwise it's looking good.
00:36:29 Anyone else have thoughts? Notes?
00:36:32 Mei-Mei, there you are.
00:36:33 -Hey, Mom...-You're ten minutes late.
00:36:35 What happened? Are you hurt? Are you hungry?
00:36:37 -Um...-Ming is a force to be reckoned with.
00:36:43 She's just a sweet innocent child.
00:36:45 How dare you take advantage of her!
00:36:47 When Sandra Oh became the voice of Ming,
00:36:51 it just felt like her characterwas starting to flesh out.
00:36:55 I knew you were trouble.
00:36:57 SHI: Sandra's so funny, but she also has so much range.
00:37:00 She added that missing pieceto the puzzle of Ming.
00:37:04 I have a double-jointed elbow!Look! I can make a perfect circle!
00:37:08 That was great.
00:37:09 I think in terms of design,
00:37:11 you wanted her to havethe really powerful shoulders
00:37:14 with these thin eyebrows,
00:37:15 kind of like Chinese ladiesfrom like the '60s,
00:37:18 -with the qipao and stuff.-I wanted traditional Chinese
00:37:22 -mixed with Working Girl.-LIU: Yeah.
00:37:29 We definitely couldn't have written Mingwithout input from Lindsey
00:37:34 and other moms on the show.
00:37:39 I came at it purely from the point of viewof the oppressed teenage daughter.
00:37:45 So it was really helpfulhearing that other side.
00:37:48 You don't know everything, you're making it up as you go along.
00:37:52 What I love about Ming is that she's notone sided, cookie cutter character
00:37:57 and certainly not as a mom.
00:37:58 And as a mom myself,I can appreciate those moments.
00:38:03 Hey, Sloane?
00:38:05 So will you remind me before we sit downto dinner to RSVP for your...
00:38:09 -Fall festival?-COLLINS: Yeah.
00:38:13 You're having conversationsthat you are like,
00:38:15 "Is this even the right conversationto be having?
00:38:18 "Am I supposed to be playingmore of a mom role?
00:38:20 "I don't even know what that is."
00:38:21 You're talking about heartbreak and datingand insecurity and body image.
00:38:28 I know how I feel about all those things,
00:38:30 yet I don't know what I'm supposedto say about any of them.
00:38:33 I don't know if I'm supposedto pretend I don't have those issues
00:38:36 or if I'm supposed to sayI had all of them.
00:38:39 We always joke that your poor oldest kidis like the first pancake.
00:38:42 You're like "Oof.
00:38:43 "Sorry, dude, I'm pretty surewe're messing this up."
00:38:46 The third one we should be good.
00:38:48 She's gonna havenothing to complain about
00:38:50 You guys...
00:38:52 The RSVP thing is closed.
00:38:54 Mom!
00:38:56 -Okay.-BOY: Is it too late?
00:38:57 Yeah, apparently. But that's okay.
00:38:59 BOY: Ready?GIRL: Yeah.
00:39:04 In a way, parenting overwhelms memuch more than my job does.
00:39:10 And I think it's just because I feel likethe stakes are so much higher.
00:39:14 (GIRL SINGING INDISTINCTLY)
00:39:16 Every choice you make as a parent
00:39:19 has equal chancesof being this great memory
00:39:21 and a successin your relationship with them,
00:39:24 or alternatively, this huge disaster
00:39:27 that they will talk aboutfor the rest of their lives
00:39:29 as the most embarrassing thingthat ever happened to them.
00:39:32 (SINGING CONTINUES)
00:39:38 FEINBERG: Okay. Who wants to get dressed?GIRL: Me!
00:39:40 (EXCLAIMING)
00:39:45 FEINBERG: We both have workedvery hard at our careers,
00:39:48 and we are late mommies.
00:39:51 And so I think both of ushave a huge amount of regard
00:39:54 for how important our work and career is,
00:39:56 and so we try to protectthat for one another.
00:39:58 On Fridays, Paige is here with the kids.We don't have the nanny.
00:40:02 And, you know, I sort of have this like,
00:40:04 any spare moment I haveI should be running out to help,
00:40:07 and she has zero expectation of that.
00:40:11 That's made it so much more doable
00:40:12 to be able to balance the two things.
00:40:15 Not that it's always easy or somethingbut it, that makes a huge difference.
00:40:21 Boy, you guys really destroyedthe house this morning.
00:40:25 You know, it's really amazingthose kids right now,
00:40:28 they're almost 17 months.
00:40:30 Maybe you can hear Jackcrying in the other room.
00:40:33 That's a little heartbreakingbecause I want to go run and help.
00:40:37 It is a massive luxuryto be able to see my kids
00:40:40 as much as I haveduring this last year-plus.
00:40:43 I never ever would havebeen able to see them as much.
00:40:46 I would have been racing home from workjust to catch them going to bed.
00:40:50 Sometimes I get to catch them for dinner.I always get to put them to bed.
00:40:57 You know, it's not likeyou can ever get that time back.
00:41:05 Yeah, I think it's working really well.
00:41:08 -MAN: Okay.-Final!
00:41:09 (ALL CLAPPING)
00:41:12 SHI: I think it took until screening sixfor us to finally have an ending.
00:41:16 And that, I think, was becauseit took a long time for me
00:41:20 to process my own relationshipwith my mother,
00:41:23 and just trying to figure outhow to be a good daughter for them.
00:41:28 I also don't knowwhat the solution is in real life.
00:41:33 Is it about being true to yourself,or is it about honoring your parents?
00:41:36 I don't know.
00:41:38 It's some messy mix of both. There's no clear answer.
00:41:45 LIU: Before I was a mom,
00:41:47 it just didn't occur to mehow hard it would be.
00:41:52 I don't know how people do it, and I don'teven know how I'm doing it right now.
00:41:59 My mom has been such a huge supporterof what I want to do,
00:42:05 and she just always believedthat I know what's best.
00:42:09 That gave me so much freedomto be the artist that I am today.
00:42:15 WOMAN: Happy baby.
00:42:21 LIU: Growing up, my parents separated,
00:42:24 and striving for perfectioncame from this feeling of like,
00:42:28 I just want to be good enoughto keep my dad and my mom.
00:42:34 And maybe...
00:42:35 Maybe if I was a perfect little girl,my parents would be together.
00:42:41 Yeah.
00:42:42 And... Hmm!
00:42:45 It worked outin the best possible way for me.
00:42:48 I feel like it made me ambitious.
00:42:52 Ever since I had a baby, my worth,
00:42:55 who I am, is no longerso much tied to others.
00:43:00 I just feel like I am a whole being
00:43:04 and I'm solid.
00:43:09 FEINBERG: I think anyone being ableto tell kids as they're
00:43:13 growing up and going throughthis sort of chaos,
00:43:16 of emotion or feeling out of control
00:43:19 or "Do my parents love me?"
00:43:20 or "Can I be who I want to beand they'll still love me?"
00:43:23 or "Who am I and what do the other kidswant me to be?"
00:43:27 We need art in general,
00:43:29 especially things that go on a screenthat kids can see
00:43:32 that tell them that it is okay.
00:43:34 And I think it's also for parents,it's okay to see all of that craziness,
00:43:38 and that's a natural part of lifeyou've got to wade through
00:43:41 to form who you really are.
00:43:44 Meilin says she's not like her mom,and that's okay.
00:43:48 And then she realizes,"I am my own person.
00:43:51 "I want to embrace this thing
00:43:54 "that every other member of my familyhas tried to lock away."
00:43:59 COLLINS: When she becomes this red panda,
00:44:02 it at first glance, represents everythingshe doesn't want to be,
00:44:05 her being different and standing outand feeling like she can't control herself
00:44:10 or the situationthe way she used to be able to.
00:44:13 You can't go through life and become theamazing person you're supposed to become
00:44:18 if things don't conspire to rockthat sense of stability.
00:44:21 When you say to embrace the red panda,
00:44:23 I think that representsbeing okay with that part of yourself.
00:44:28 It's okay not to bein control all the time.
00:44:30 It's okay to be messy. It's okay to be loud.
00:44:32 It's okay to be noticed.
00:44:35 If you don't accept it, it's a curse.
00:44:38 And then if you embrace it,then it's a gift that keeps on giving.
00:44:43 I mean, for Mei, once she embraced it,her whole life opened up to her.
00:44:48 FEINBERG: The last year-pluswith the pandemic
00:44:50 has been unlike anythingany of us have experienced.
00:44:54 It's been incredibly difficult,it's been very stressful,
00:44:57 and for me, this is the funniest movieI've ever worked on,
00:45:00 and so, if even at just that levelpeople get to have some laughs,
00:45:06 I think that would be amazing.
00:45:09 But it also has this much deeper thing
00:45:11 of really being able to reach outand say, "It's okay."
00:45:14 If you're confused and feeling crazyand you don't know who you are
00:45:17 and you might let your parentsor yourself down,
00:45:20 that's a natural part of growing up.
00:45:22 And if that could be what we provide for,
00:45:25 I think even one kid out there, that would be really amazing.
00:45:32 -(BABY COOS)-(LAUGHS)
00:45:37 SHI: Come on. Good Cornflake.
00:45:42 Darren made a quiche yesterday.
00:45:46 Look, your quiche is on camera.
00:45:48 So cool. I like how you guys designed it.
00:45:52 -In there?-WOMAN: Yes.
00:45:58 COLLINS: When these dogs come in hereand start snoring so loudly,
00:46:00 to the point where they're like...(SNORES)
00:46:13 WOMAN: Do you, Rona, take Dylanto be your lawfully wedded spouse?
00:46:16 I do.
00:46:17 Congratulations, you may kiss.
00:46:24 Good boy. Got it?
00:46:26 Great job.
00:46:45 (SINGING) Final!
