00:00:25 [Brendan Fraser] Long ago…
00:00:29 a group of sea lionsmade an extraordinary journey
00:00:39 from the west coast of the Americasout into the Pacific Ocean.
00:00:57 What they found was a paradise
00:01:06 isolated from the rest of the world,
00:01:11 forged in fire and water.
00:01:24 Each island with its own distinct character
00:01:33 and each home to a unique community of castaways
00:01:42 delivered here by chance.
00:01:44 [tortoise grunts]
00:01:48 [bird squawking]
00:01:51 And beneath the water's surface,an underwater world unlike any other.
00:02:10 Today, the descendantsof those first sea lions
00:02:16 rule these waves.
00:02:39 [birds chirping]
00:02:46 One evening, on a quiet beach,
00:02:50 a young female, Luna, comes ashore.
00:03:01 This is her home island,
00:03:04 a haven for both her and her newborn pup…
00:03:08 [sea lion pup bleats]
00:03:11 Leo.
00:03:14 [Leo bleats]
00:03:17 Sea lions usuallyonly give birth to a single pup.
00:03:23 So, to Luna, Leo is the mostprecious thing in the world.
00:03:31 [Luna honks]
00:03:36 She will stay right here beside himfor the first week
00:03:40 as they memorize each other's calland smell and cement their bond.
00:03:46 [Luna and Leo bleating]
00:03:50 [bird squawking]
00:03:58 This small colony of sea lions is made upalmost entirely of females and pups.
00:04:06 [sea lions bleating]
00:04:08 - Except, of course, for the beachmaster.- [beachmaster groans]
00:04:14 He's the boss here, the bull.
00:04:18 Adult males fight over females,
00:04:20 and this guyis the current heavyweight champion.
00:04:27 [Leo bleats]
00:04:31 Right from the start, each puphas their own distinct personality
00:04:38 that will shape the type of sea lionthey will become.
00:04:46 [Leo bleats]
00:04:47 Most pups stay close to their mothersin these early days.
00:04:52 But Leo, he's eagerto figure things out for himself,
00:04:57 - like gravity.- [Leo groans]
00:05:01 Once he masters walking, the possibilities are endless.
00:05:07 The most important thingis learning how to find your mom.
00:05:12 [sea lion grunts]
00:05:19 [barks]
00:05:21 Nope. Wrong mom.
00:05:24 [Leo groans]
00:05:26 This is the one.
00:05:32 [Leo whines]
00:05:42 As the days pass, Leo grows fast.
00:05:47 Thanks to his mom's rich milk.
00:05:52 [Luna bleating]
00:05:54 Soon, Luna decideshe's ready for his first test.
00:06:00 [beachmaster braying]
00:06:02 The beachmasterwill make sure the coast is clear.
00:06:08 While the land is a safe place for pups, the water is not.
00:06:15 [Luna groans]
00:06:23 Sharks patrol these shores.
00:06:28 They time their visitsspecifically to coincide with pup season.
00:06:44 [bleating]
00:06:46 Once he gives the green light,
00:06:48 it's safe for Leoto enter the water for the first time.
00:06:54 [Leo bleating]
00:07:12 Remind me why we're doing this.
00:07:15 [Leo whining]
00:07:18 This is a young sea lion'sfirst rite of passage.
00:07:25 Swimming lessons.
00:07:31 Luna stays with him every step of the way.
00:07:39 Sea lion pups can swimwithin a week of being born.
00:07:52 [Leo grunts]
00:07:54 This is a huge accomplishment.
00:07:56 [Luna brays]
00:08:01 Maybe Leo could become a big, brave beachmaster someday.
00:08:05 [braying]
00:08:10 Time to dry off.
00:08:12 The sand technique.
00:08:21 It's not for everyone.
00:08:24 [bleats]
00:08:32 [whines]
00:08:38 Leo aced his first swimming lesson today.
00:08:43 At bedtimean incredible light show begins.
00:08:50 The Galápagos are so completely isolatedfrom the rest of the world
00:08:54 that the stars here shine brighterthan almost anywhere on the planet.
00:09:15 Next morning,Leo follows Luna down to the water's edge.
00:09:22 But this is no swimming lesson.
00:09:26 This is something she must do alone.
00:09:31 For adult sea lions, every dayspent on land is a day without food.
00:09:37 - [Luna groans]- [Leo whimpers]
00:09:39 Luna has to return to sea to feed herselfand replenish her milk supply,
00:09:49 and Leo has no choice but to stay behind.
00:09:53 [Leo grunting]
00:10:14 Leo's never been alone before.
00:10:18 [birds clicking]
00:10:25 [Leo huffs]
00:10:27 Maybe he could hang out with these guys.
00:10:37 Sally Lightfoot crabs.
00:10:41 Sounds friendly.
00:10:54 Where you going?
00:11:06 [Leo grunts]
00:11:07 [groans] Making friends is hard.
00:11:16 [iguana huffs]
00:11:19 An iguana.
00:11:26 Maybe he can be Leo's…
00:11:27 [iguana snorts]
00:11:30 How do you like that? Not even a hello.
00:11:45 [Leo whimpers]
00:11:47 Will he ever find a friend?
00:11:57 Far out at sea,Luna is focused on one goal.
00:12:04 Fish.
00:12:09 And she's joined upwith some other hungry sea lions.
00:12:15 Together they makean elite team of hunters.
00:12:39 There's a hidden covethey'll use to execute their plan.
00:12:55 An experienced hunter,
00:12:56 Luna positions herselfat the head of the pack.
00:13:04 Gradually, they drive the fishtoward the cove,
00:13:08 but they need to watch their own backs.
00:13:10 They're not the only predatorshunting here today.
00:13:17 Blacktip sharks.
00:13:23 The sea lions at the back of the groupneed to stay extra focused on the sharks
00:13:27 and wrap up this hunt quickly.
00:13:36 At the front of the pack, the water's getting shallower
00:13:40 and the fish are beginning to panic.
00:13:46 They're trapped.
00:13:51 Now a third group enters the mix.
00:13:54 Brown pelicans.
00:13:57 Pirates.
00:13:58 [pelicans cawing]
00:14:03 The sea lions are rushing their attack, trying to outrun the sharks.
00:14:10 [pelicans squawking]
00:14:13 But now the pelicans descendand grab the fish
00:14:16 right before the sea lionscan push them up onto the beach.
00:14:22 They let the sea lions do all the workand then swoop in and steal the bounty.
00:14:32 And there's nothing Luna can do about it.
00:14:34 [Luna barks]
00:14:41 They're robbing the sea lions blind.
00:14:46 [huffs]
00:14:48 These guys will jam three, even four fish down their gullets at once.
00:14:55 They're so greedy, they'll even try to rob each other.
00:15:04 [Luna roars]
00:15:07 Luna can only watch.
00:15:09 Stunned by the sheer gluttony.
00:15:16 But she's not aboutto let these thieves win the day.
00:15:27 Back on their home island,
00:15:30 [Leo bleats]
00:15:31 Leo is working on his sea lion call.
00:15:37 [Leo bleating]
00:15:42 A neighboring pup, Maya, comes over to investigate.
00:15:49 [Leo bleats]
00:15:52 [Maya bleats]
00:15:54 She's not sureif Leo passes the smell test,
00:15:59 but, before you know it,they're off to the beach together.
00:16:19 It seems Leo's finally found a friend.
00:16:27 Someone who loves to exploreas much as he does.
00:16:51 It's pretty clearthese two were meant for the ocean.
00:16:58 And just like his mom,Leo's a natural at corralling fish.
00:17:19 Out at sea, Luna is scoping outanother shoal of fish for the team.
00:17:54 The hunting party assemblesfor a second run.
00:18:05 These guys again?
00:18:06 [pelicans squawking]
00:18:08 Game on.
00:18:19 The sea lions are outmaneuveringthe sharks this time.
00:18:34 The team is in textbook formation.
00:18:41 The pelicans convergefor another smash-and-grab.
00:18:43 [pelicans squawking]
00:19:00 But this time the sea lions manage topush the fish further up onto the beach
00:19:05 and shove the pelicans out of the way.
00:19:07 [sea lions grunting]
00:19:11 Finally, the hardworking huntersget to enjoy what they've earned.
00:19:21 It's an all-you-can-eat buffetfor Luna and her friends.
00:19:26 And no pelicans allowed.
00:19:36 Give me that fish, and get out of here.
00:19:41 Luna fills her belly.
00:19:45 Now she's got all she needs to feed Leo,
00:19:49 plus, a pretty impressive victoryover those pelican pirates.
00:19:56 - [pelicans squawking]- [sea lions growling]
00:20:04 It's been two days since Luna left.
00:20:07 In her absence,Leo started to push his boundaries.
00:20:12 He's on his wayto the other side of the island.
00:20:16 - [flies buzzing]- [birds chirping, twittering]
00:20:21 Hello up there.
00:20:22 [croaking]
00:20:29 Yeah, it's gonna be a little trickymaking friends over here.
00:20:38 Do not approach the other moms.
00:20:40 [sea lion huffs, growls]
00:20:47 [sea lions braying]
00:20:54 Leo ventures even further outonto the lava rock shore.
00:21:17 Whew. It's hot out here.
00:21:21 He's gotta get out of the sun.
00:21:28 Maybe a swim?
00:21:39 Leo loves the ocean.
00:21:44 But this is nothis cozy little home beach.
00:21:49 These are jagged rocks, and the tide is rising.
00:22:07 Soon he's surrounded by water.
00:22:13 [Leo bleats]
00:22:20 His swimming lessonsdid not prepare him for this.
00:22:23 [Leo bleats]
00:22:30 The white water pulls him down.
00:22:42 [Leo grunts]
00:22:56 Leo finally makes his wayto calmer waters.
00:22:59 [Leo grunts]
00:23:01 And just then, a call rising upover the sound of the waves.
00:23:08 [Luna bellowing]
00:23:09 He knows that voice, but where is she?
00:23:12 [Leo bleating]
00:23:16 He's so exhausted.
00:23:19 He can't figure it out.
00:23:21 [Luna bellowing]
00:23:27 There she is.
00:23:29 [bellowing and bleating continue]
00:23:43 Mom's come home.
00:24:03 Leo has done an incredible jobof surviving on his own.
00:24:10 And now Luna has the foodfrom her hunting trip
00:24:13 to nourish him with lots of fresh milk.
00:24:55 Nearly a year has passed,
00:24:58 and Leo's tiny mangrove islandhas seen some changes.
00:25:02 [sea lions grunting and groaning]
00:25:08 [Leo growls]
00:25:12 [growling continues]
00:25:19 The humble beach he was born ontohas become a bustling city.
00:25:28 With hundreds of new sea lionshaving moved here from other islands,
00:25:38 the place isn't what it used to be.
00:25:47 Luna is still a comfort, of course,but there's a new problem.
00:25:52 As of late…
00:25:53 [beachmaster growls]
00:25:55 …the beachmasteris no longer a friendly protector to Leo.
00:26:00 Quite the opposite.
00:26:01 [beachmaster braying]
00:26:03 Leo's not a young pup anymore,
00:26:05 so he's becoming much less welcomeon a beach full of females.
00:26:13 [beachmaster roars]
00:26:15 [Leo whines]
00:26:19 He can't understand whythe beachmaster's trying to separate him
00:26:22 from his mother.
00:26:23 He used to look up to this guy.
00:26:27 [Leo grunts]
00:26:28 [beachmaster braying]
00:26:35 [growls]
00:26:39 Luna has given himthe best possible start,
00:26:42 but her role is coming to an end.
00:26:49 Leo can play in the shallowsaround his island for now,
00:26:54 but there will come a pointwhen he'll have to leave this place.
00:27:05 At least down here, he doesn't have todeal with the beachmaster.
00:27:23 Unlike most marine mammals,
00:27:26 sea lions generate their powerwith their front flippers,
00:27:29 not their tails.
00:27:33 It allows them to be incredibly agilein the water.
00:27:42 In the coming years,
00:27:43 these young sea lions will honetheir skills in preparation for adulthood.
00:27:55 And for Leo,that starts with exploring the ocean.
00:28:09 The Devil's Crown, the remnants of an ancient volcano,
00:28:15 and the ideal destination for a young, exiled adventurer.
00:28:21 Leo is now four years old
00:28:24 and is no longer welcomeon the beach he once called home.
00:28:30 But the stunning marine spectacleson this neighboring island
00:28:33 are a helpful distraction.
00:28:37 Galápagos sea lions can dive deeperand for longer periods
00:28:41 than any other sea lion species,
00:28:45 reaching depths of nearly 2,000 feet.
00:28:51 And the deeper Leo dives, the more wonderful the sights.
00:29:03 Blue and gold snapper.
00:29:06 Black-nosed butterfly fish.
00:29:11 Even a guinea fowl puffer.
00:29:16 But best of all,Maya has come by to check in on him.
00:29:23 She already knows this islandand where to find some potential friends.
00:29:33 The problem is not everyonewants to be friends with them.
00:29:40 That's not gonna stop themfrom trying though.
00:29:51 Okay, enough of this. Who's next?
00:29:58 Whitetip sharks.
00:30:01 They're nocturnal predators.
00:30:05 During the day, they just want a place to rest.
00:30:11 But that's not gonna happen
00:30:14 because when sea lions want to play, they're gonna play.
00:30:21 And today's game is "Chase the Shark."
00:30:33 Can-Can I squeeze in here?
00:30:51 Hey. Hi. Found ya.
00:30:58 Leo seems to know to only nip at this end,and not the toothy one.
00:31:06 Sea lions.
00:31:08 I hate this game.
00:31:16 Having made zero friends down here,Maya decides it's time to head home.
00:31:26 Not Leo though.
00:31:29 They both know at his age
00:31:32 the beachmasterwon't allow him in the colony.
00:31:39 He says goodbye to his childhood friend.
00:31:45 There is no going back for Leo.
00:31:48 Only forward.
00:32:10 Leo hauls out on a nearby island.
00:32:14 [bird chirping]
00:32:15 Española.
00:32:18 It's a little busy here.
00:32:25 But he can probably grab a napand warm up after his dive.
00:32:31 Some familiar faces
00:32:34 and some new ones.
00:32:38 Where Leo's from,they don't have Nazca boobies.
00:32:46 Definitely not the sandy beachesLeo was hoping for.
00:32:51 [Leo yawns]
00:32:55 But right now,he just needs a place to sleep.
00:33:04 What he doesn't know is thatthere are more than just boobies here.
00:33:11 There are waved albatrosses, and it's mating season.
00:33:17 [albatross honks]
00:33:20 This could be a problem.
00:33:24 These birds partner for life,so this annual ritual isn't just for show.
00:33:34 It can be 20 minutes long,
00:33:37 and it involves bill clacking…
00:33:40 [albatross honks]
00:33:43 …bowing,
00:33:46 swaying,
00:33:49 honking…
00:33:50 [honking continues]
00:33:51 …and to top it all off, the silent scream.
00:33:56 Ah.
00:34:04 Almost every waved albatross in the worldcomes to this island to breed.
00:34:09 [honking continues]
00:34:14 And the noise is relentless.
00:34:17 [bill clacking]
00:34:23 So much for resting.
00:34:37 Unable to return to his home beach,
00:34:40 Leo moves onin search of someplace more welcoming.
00:34:47 [birds squawking]
00:35:10 Like Leo, the Galápagos islandsthemselves are on their own journey.
00:35:20 The relentless volcanic activity herehas them always moving, always changing.
00:35:31 And it's possible any one of themcould become Leo's home one day.
00:35:46 Eventually, Leo finds an islandwhere the coastline is rough and exposed,
00:35:54 and the swell is picking up.
00:35:55 [waves rumbling]
00:36:06 [bubbles popping]
00:36:11 If there's one thing Leo can't resist,
00:36:18 it's surfing.
00:36:45 From out of the blue, another sea lion joins Leo.
00:36:53 And he's brought with himsome other young exiles.
00:37:50 With spirits riding high,
00:37:52 Leo starts up a game of"Catch the Sea Urchin."
00:38:19 But on this reef, playing games can be costly.
00:38:49 Leo senses something.
00:38:55 Run for it.
00:39:23 A close call, but they all managed to escape.
00:39:31 A massive 12-foot Galápagos sharkon the hunt for young sea lions.
00:39:42 With no adults around to protect them,Leo steps up.
00:39:50 If he can't conquer his fear,he'll never become a beachmaster.
00:40:01 The others follow his lead.
00:40:04 Leo is gonna take on this shark.
00:40:11 He's learned from chasingthe whitetips at Devil's Crown…
00:40:17 nipping on their sensitive tailsis something that sharks hate.
00:40:23 He shows the others how it's done.
00:40:42 Finally the shark retreats.
00:40:45 It's had enough.
00:40:51 When things got heated,
00:40:53 Leo was able to rise to the occasionand face down the shark.
00:41:01 Very few male sea lionsgo on to become beachmasters,
00:41:05 but Leo is showinghe might just have what it takes.
00:41:13 He leaves his surfing friends behindand continues on alone.
00:41:22 But now much more empowered.
00:41:33 The waters throughout the Galápagosare some of the richest on Earth
00:41:37 with over 500 types of fish.
00:41:44 For a lone sea lion, catching fishin open water is nearly impossible.
00:41:59 But there are other ways.
00:42:08 Some fish hide from predatorsinside rocky crevices.
00:42:13 Thankfully, Leo is patient.
00:42:19 Sea lions have the longest whiskersof any mammal
00:42:22 that can sensethe tiniest vibrations in the water.
00:42:35 As Leo pokes around,he realizes something.
00:42:42 If he blows bubbles into the rocks,
00:42:45 he can flush out the fishfrom their hiding spots.
00:43:10 Gotcha.
00:43:24 It's a start,
00:43:25 but he'll need much larger catchesif he wants to become a beachmaster.
00:43:35 Leo presses on.
00:43:38 The Galápagos archipelagois spread over a vast area.
00:43:46 23,000 square miles.
00:43:49 So sea lionshave to make huge ocean crossings.
00:44:14 So far in his life,Leo has only explored a few places,
00:44:19 but there are over a hundred islands, islets, and rocks in the Galápagos.
00:44:27 And each has its own special qualitiesthat make it exceptional.
00:44:37 Newly formed islands are just barren rock.
00:44:42 Freshly cooled lavawhere life struggles to get a hold.
00:44:51 On older islands, plants have had time to establish,
00:44:56 creating rich, varied habitats.
00:44:59 [birds chirping]
00:45:15 On the far western edgeof the archipelago lies Fernandina,
00:45:21 the youngest island of them all.
00:45:27 [Leo huffs]
00:45:32 It looks pretty inhospitableon the surface.
00:45:38 But underwaterit is a very different story.
00:45:43 Deepwater currents make these shoressome of the most productive
00:45:47 in all of the Galápagos.
00:45:51 The water is so cold, even penguins have made a home here.
00:46:02 Leo has seen iguanas like theseon his home island,
00:46:05 but what are they doing down here?
00:46:10 Galápagos marine iguanasare the only lizards on Earth
00:46:13 that have evolved to swim underwater.
00:46:18 They feed almost entirely on algae.
00:46:24 But the local damselfishdo not appreciate these land creatures
00:46:28 coming down here and just helpingthemselves to whatever they want.
00:46:37 Tearing apart their front lawns.
00:46:44 And they're not going tojust put up with it. [grunts]
00:46:50 [groans] Fine. The iguana's had enough.
00:46:57 But now it's Leo's turn.
00:47:10 Leo knows what it's likewhen you're not welcome.
00:47:21 You're a pretty good swimmer,you know that?
00:47:50 After a long, slightly annoying dive,
00:47:54 the iguana returns to the lava rockthat is home.
00:48:03 Many others are also hauled out here.
00:48:08 Thousands of them.
00:48:11 Their ancestors were amongst thefirst animals to arrive on these islands.
00:48:25 [lizard sneezes]
00:48:28 Not exactly a warm welcome for Leo.
00:48:35 The lizards sneeze outthe excess salt water
00:48:38 that has accumulated in their bodiesfrom their diving trips.
00:48:45 Leo also notices other island inhabitantssneakily slithering through the rocks.
00:48:55 Racer snakes.
00:49:01 Hundreds of them are amassing.
00:49:06 All waiting for one thing.
00:49:11 Newly hatched baby iguanas.
00:49:38 Every route seems blocked.
00:50:09 This is one gruesome place.
00:50:16 The little oneswho manage to make it through
00:50:18 are safe with the adult iguanas.
00:50:20 [flies buzzing]
00:50:27 Fernandina is a recently formed island,
00:50:30 and at its heartis an active simmering volcano.
00:50:35 A ticking time bomb.
00:50:39 Its relentless volcanic activityis constantly reshaping its landscape.
00:50:43 [birds squawking]
00:50:46 But these harsh lava rock surroundingsalso create an opportunity for Leo.
00:50:58 This jagged, uneven coastlineis a perfect hunting ground.
00:51:04 And now that he's an adult,
00:51:06 Leo is readyto set his sights on bigger prey.
00:51:13 Much bigger prey.
00:51:15 Yellowfin tuna.
00:51:18 They can weigh up to 130 pounds
00:51:22 and are capable of travelingat 40 miles per hour.
00:51:26 Twice as fast as a sea lion.
00:51:32 And just when Leo thoughthe was all alone out here,
00:51:37 another young adult sea lionshows up from a neighboring island
00:51:41 and he's eager to join Leo in the hunt.
00:51:57 Neither of them seem to knowquite how to approach this.
00:52:08 The tuna don't seemall that hard to round up.
00:52:18 But each time they get close, they manage to slip through.
00:52:35 Leo almost gets one,
00:52:37 but they're nearly impossibleto hold on to.
00:52:44 They're so quick.
00:53:00 [warbling]
00:53:05 Well, this isn't working.
00:53:12 Out of options, Leo looks tothe island's quiet inner coves.
00:53:20 There's an old exiled beachmasterwho lives here.
00:53:24 It's a bit of a gamble,
00:53:27 but Leo's gonna seeif he can get him to help.
00:53:37 Waking a full-grown bull sea lionfrom his nap is not a great idea.
00:53:44 But when Leo wants to make friends,he can be pretty persuasive.
00:53:57 Amazingly, Leo convinces himto join the hunt.
00:54:06 What Leo doesn't know about this old bull…
00:54:11 is that, when it comes to catching tuna, this guy is a legend.
00:54:20 The two younger sea lionshead out in front,
00:54:24 while the maestro hangs behind.
00:54:31 Leo and his partner chase the tunaall around the cove,
00:54:35 and the old master blocks the exit.
00:54:42 What he lacks in speed,he makes up for in brains.
00:54:48 He knows the tuna,as fast as they are, tire out quickly.
00:54:57 Eventually, they begin to single one fish out.
00:55:43 - Finally, the tuna's out of energy…- [sea lion braying]
00:55:46 …and out of water.
00:55:50 The young ones step aside
00:55:52 and let the old pro show themhow to deal with one of these huge things.
00:55:59 [sea lions grunting]
00:56:06 [birds warbling]
00:56:14 Leo can pack on the muscle he needs.
00:56:23 [birds twittering]
00:56:33 And thanks to the old beachmaster,
00:56:35 he's learned thatnot all adult males are hostile.
00:56:40 It's up to Leo to decidewhat sort of bull sea lion he will become.
00:56:50 [volcano eruption explosions]
00:57:00 The volcano has awoken, spewing molten rock across the island.
00:57:16 As the 2,000-degree lavaflows into the sea,
00:57:20 the water instantly evaporates.
00:57:30 Fernandina is on fire.
00:57:35 And Leo is forced to move on again.
00:57:45 A growing sea lion without a home.
00:58:06 Three years have passed, and Leo is now seven years old.
00:58:12 His travels throughout the Galápagoshave taken him from dead volcanoes
00:58:17 to lava eruptions and more,
00:58:20 but he's never experiencedthe blissful side of volcanic activity…
00:58:25 until today.
00:58:27 Hot gas bubbles from molten magmapercolating up through the sea floor.
00:58:38 The lava rock in this area was filledwith these bubbles when it cooled,
00:58:42 giving it a unique coarse texture.
00:58:49 Perfect for scratching up against.
00:58:54 Leo finds a group of femaleswho welcome him to their little spa
00:58:59 and happily show himthe art of exfoliation.
00:59:23 Once they're good and pampered,
00:59:26 Leo tags along with themas they head back to their home island.
00:59:40 The shallows hereremind Leo of his old home.
00:59:59 This magnificent extinct volcanois Beagle Island.
01:00:05 Its sheltered sandy shoremakes it the perfect home for sea lions.
01:00:09 [sea lions braying]
01:00:13 Leo's hit the jackpot.
01:00:17 A beach full of females.
01:00:28 Finally, a community he can be a part of.
01:00:40 But wherever there's a nice beach,somewhere there's a beachmaster.
01:00:50 [beachmaster growls]
01:00:53 And the nicer the beach, the bigger the beachmaster.
01:00:58 [beachmaster growls]
01:01:05 Whoa. Leo did not realizethere was gonna be any competition here.
01:01:10 [Leo honks]
01:01:20 [roars]
01:01:22 He's way outmatched.
01:01:27 [barks]
01:01:32 But he's got an idea.
01:01:35 [beachmaster braying]
01:01:36 Maybe not the best idea, but it's better than the alternative.
01:01:47 One thing is for sure,
01:01:49 that big beachmaster is not goingto make it up here.
01:01:54 He'll just be waiting down there.
01:01:59 [Leo bellows]
01:02:04 [bleats]
01:02:07 For a minute there,Leo thought he had something.
01:02:11 But he has to face the truth.
01:02:13 He can't competewith the beachmaster yet.
01:02:16 And until he can,
01:02:19 he'll never have his own community.
01:02:23 [Leo grunts]
01:02:34 [Leo groaning]
01:02:45 Time to make a quiet exit.
01:02:53 He just needs to figure outa way to get down from here…
01:03:03 without waking you-know-who.
01:03:07 [beachmaster growls]
01:03:12 Probably best to just take the back way.
01:03:26 [beachmaster yawns]
01:03:31 It's not elegant,
01:03:35 but it gets the job done.
01:03:45 Banished for the second time in his life.
01:03:59 Leo heads north,
01:04:01 towards the most remote islandsin the archipelago.
01:04:20 Open ocean crossingscan take sea lions days.
01:04:29 But even out here, in the vast empty blue, there are pockets of life.
01:04:41 A bait ball of Pacific sardines.
01:04:50 This is a perfect opportunity for Leoas he looks to bulk up.
01:05:11 The changing shapes and colorsare mesmerizing…
01:05:18 and Leo quickly finds himselfchasing shadows.
01:05:40 Luckily, a roaming sea lion podshows up to pitch in.
01:05:51 It's organized chaos
01:05:55 as they piercethe bait ball from every direction…
01:06:02 and corral the fish toward each other.
01:06:24 Leo is finally getting the feast he needs.
01:06:44 Bait balls like thisare fleeting spectacles
01:06:48 and rarely last for long.
01:06:53 As he departswith a belly full of sardines,
01:06:57 Leo notices the othersfloating at the surface.
01:07:03 Far from shoreand unable to warm up after their dive,
01:07:08 they poke their flippers out of the waterand use them like solar panels.
01:07:21 It's definitely…
01:07:25 creative.
01:07:29 But Leo's not feeling it.
01:07:32 He's gonna continue northas far as he can go.
01:07:38 There's an island he spottedon the horizon.
01:07:43 Darwin. The most remote region of the Galápagos.
01:07:54 For Leo, this is the edge of the world.
01:08:01 Sea lions can only remain out at seafor so long.
01:08:05 Eventually, they have to warm up on land.
01:08:16 Timing the leap is incredibly difficult.
01:08:27 Get it wrong, and you could be smashedagainst the rocks.
01:08:57 Miraculously he's found a ledgewhere he can finally rest.
01:09:04 [Leo grunts]
01:09:07 [birds twittering]
01:09:10 Darwin Island's closest neighbor,Wolf Island, hides a dark secret.
01:09:21 While Nazca boobies can flygreat distances across the ocean
01:09:24 to mate here…
01:09:25 [Nazca boobies honking]
01:09:28 …these little birds cannot.
01:09:32 They're stranded here,
01:09:35 and the sparse vegetationon this desolate island
01:09:37 isn't enough to sustain them.
01:09:43 So, they're forced to resortto desperate measures.
01:09:50 These are vampire finches.
01:09:55 And they feed on the bloodof the native Nazca boobies who nest here.
01:10:00 [Nazca booby trills]
01:10:01 [finches chirping]
01:10:03 Their distant ancestorswould've only been eating parasites
01:10:07 from the boobies' feathers.
01:10:10 And as the boobies benefitedfrom this service,
01:10:12 they tolerated these smaller birds.
01:10:20 But somewhere along the line, isolation and evolution
01:10:25 turned these little songbirdsinto bloodsucking carnivores.
01:10:31 [finch squawks]
01:10:42 These northernmost islandshave offered Leo nothing but rocky cliffs
01:10:47 and thrashing waves.
01:10:59 He has no choicebut to continue on his journey.
01:11:03 [splashes]
01:11:26 Over the next several years,
01:11:30 Leo explores every cornerof the Galápagos.
01:11:43 All its creatures…
01:11:46 all its magic.
01:12:31 His lifelong quest has taught himso many things,
01:12:37 and yet it's still missingthe most important thing…
01:12:42 a home.
01:12:48 It's been ten yearssince Leo left his home beach
01:12:52 and his mother and Maya.
01:12:57 And he's now a fully grown adult,
01:13:00 still searching for his placein this island world.
01:13:16 Another barren islandwith menacing cliffs and no beaches.
01:13:22 [Leo growls]
01:13:23 Leo's seen it alland is prepared for any scenario.
01:13:47 He's older and wiser now, more confident.
01:13:55 And willing to take greater risksto get what he wants.
01:14:03 There's a current in this tunnelthat seems to be pulling him in.
01:14:10 It might lead somewhere.
01:14:30 There's an opening.
01:15:00 A secret beach.
01:15:03 That seems like paradise.
01:15:12 - [sea lions bleating]- [Leo grunts]
01:15:18 But he knows by nownot to trust first appearances.
01:15:27 [beachmaster huffing]
01:15:29 Sure enough, this beach is already taken.
01:15:33 [beachmaster growling]
01:15:39 But Leo's not a frightenedyoung sea lion anymore.
01:15:42 [Leo brays]
01:15:50 And now,he's just as big as this beachmaster.
01:15:56 [both roaring, barking]
01:16:14 [roaring, barking continues]
01:16:26 - [Leo brays]- [beachmaster growls]
01:16:33 [Leo growls]
01:16:37 Finally, the old beachmaster has had enough.
01:16:41 [old beachmaster whining]
01:16:44 Leo shows him the exit.
01:16:53 [Leo braying]
01:16:56 After years of searching…
01:17:00 from one end of the Galápagosto the other,
01:17:03 Leo has finally found a home.
01:17:07 [braying continues]
01:17:15 His mother, Luna, who nurtured his adventurous spirit…
01:17:21 who cared for him and taught him so well…
01:17:26 would be proudof the beachmaster he's become.
01:17:33 In time, more sea lions will arrive here,
01:17:38 and they need not fear sharks…
01:17:42 not as long as Leo patrols these waters.
01:17:49 The females and pups who live herewill be safe and secure.
01:17:56 [sea lion pup yawns]
01:17:58 [sneezes]
01:18:02 [Leo bleating]
01:18:04 Leo has overcome every challengeon his incredible island odyssey.
01:18:11 Now he's ready to lead.
01:18:17 And to raise up his own familyon his own beach.
01:18:25 This is his reward. This is his moment.
01:18:32 This is his home.
01:19:28 [crew] Look at that.
01:19:29 The wildest thing,I reckon, I've ever filmed.
01:19:43 [chattering]
01:19:50 [sea lion pup grunts]
01:19:53 [bleats]
