00:18:44 What is that, doctor?
00:18:45 I like thembetter than I like you.
00:18:48 Doctor, they do indeed haveone redeeming characteristic.
00:18:52 What's that?
00:18:54 They do not talk too much.
00:18:56 When you have the kind ofcynical wit of McCoy,
00:18:59 and you have the swaggerand braggadocio of Kirk,
00:19:03 and then you have the intellectand cold reason of Spock,
00:19:07 he's like the perfect humanbeing all wrapped up in one.
00:19:16 [Announcer] The followingprogram is brought to you
00:19:27 [Adam Nimoy]That first night
00:19:29 we had to actually goto some friends' house,
00:19:30 because they had a color TV,a big console color TV.
00:19:34 We did not.
00:19:35 We had a big consoleblack and white.
00:19:37 Why don't you tell meI'm an attractive young lady
00:19:40 or ask me if I'veever been in love?
00:19:43 Tell me how your planet Vulcanlooks on a lazy evening
00:19:51 Vulcan has no moon, Miss Uhura.
00:19:53 I'm not surprised, Mr. Spock.
00:19:57 Dad in his costume,Vulcan costume,
00:20:01 it was like,"Wow, this is really cool."
00:20:03 I remember it was just suchan exciting night for us.
00:20:07 This is not Nancy.
00:20:08 If she were Nancy, could she take this?
00:20:11 Stop it! Stop it, Spock!
00:20:14 Stop it!
00:20:18 [Captain Kirk]Do you read?
00:20:20 Frequency open, Mr. Spock.
00:20:23 Spock here, Captain.
00:20:27 [chattering][laughing]
00:20:33 - Hi, Daddy.- [laughing]
00:20:35 [Adam Nimoy]When I came
00:20:37 They started shootingthat first season
00:20:38 at the end of Mayand early June in 1966.
00:20:41 I was nine,almost 10 years old,
00:20:43 and I was offfor summer vacation.
00:20:46 And this is why Dad wouldtake me to work with him.
00:20:48 I would get up earlyin the morning,
00:20:50 and we would driveto Desilu right next
00:20:53 and I'd be there all day.
00:20:56 So I went out to California, and of course, Leonard
00:20:59 I stayed at Leonard's home.
00:21:01 And he said, "Guess what.I've got this new show."
00:21:05 This is 1966.
00:21:07 I said, "What is it?" He said,"It's called 'Star Trek.'"
00:21:09 He said, "You've gottacome on the set."
00:21:11 You know, I'm in the theater,
00:21:13 and this is my firsttime in Hollywood.
00:21:15 And I'm out there, and I walk on the set,
00:21:18 and I see Leonard.
00:21:21 He came outfrom the dressing room,
00:21:24 and I see this hair.
00:21:26 I see these eyebrowsup to here.
00:21:29 And I see these ears on him,
00:21:32 and I said,"Jeez, what is this?"
00:21:35 And he did a scene, and he was terrific
00:21:39 But I said...I got him to the side.
00:21:41 I said, "Leonard,Leonard, come here.
00:21:46 I said, "No matter what you do,you've got to get out of this
00:21:50 This is a treadmillto oblivion."
00:21:53 The review that"Variety" gave us
00:21:57 when we first went on the airin September of 1966.
00:22:00 [audience laughing]
00:22:02 And I thought you'd enjoyhearing what our show business
00:22:06 the first weekwe went on the air.
00:22:08 This is dated September--
00:22:10 It appeared onSeptember 14th, 1966,
00:22:14 It said, "'Star Trek'with William Shatner,
00:22:18 [audience laughingand applauding]
00:22:21 "'Star Trek' won't work."
00:22:23 [audience laughing]
00:22:26 That's the opening line.
00:22:29 Then it says, "An incredibleand dreary mess of confusion...
00:22:34 "trudged on for a long hour..."
00:22:36 - [laughs]- [audience laughing]
00:22:38 "...with hardly any relieffrom violence, killings,
00:22:42 and a distasteful,ugly monster."
00:22:44 [audience laughing]
00:22:46 - "William Shatner--" Shush!- [audience laughing]
00:22:50 "William Shatnerappears wooden," it says.
00:22:54 [audience laughing]
00:22:56 [laughing]
00:22:59 I didn't say it.It says it here, right?
00:23:03 [laughing]I never heard him
00:23:05 accused of being woodenbefore, you know.
00:23:08 [audience laughing]
00:23:10 "Spock!"
00:23:12 [audience laughing]
00:23:16 "Scotty!"
00:23:19 "I need warp speedin four minutes,
00:23:22 [audience laughing]
00:23:23 Then it says, "The samegoes for Leonard Nimoy."
00:23:27 - [laughing]- [audience laughing]
00:23:30 There are 500 or 1,000who could play our characters
00:23:35 There's only one personwho could play Mr. Spock.
00:23:38 [Leonard Nimoy] Spock calledfor exactly the kind of work
00:23:45 He was a character with a richand dynamic inner life,
00:23:48 half human, half Vulcan.
00:23:51 He was the embodimentof the outsider,
00:23:53 like the immigrantswho surrounded me
00:23:57 How do you find your way
00:23:59 as the alienin a foreign culture?
00:24:02 Keep your Vulcan hands off me.
00:24:06 Just keep away.
00:24:08 Your feelings might be hurt, you green-blooded half breed.
00:24:12 May I say that I havenot thoroughly enjoyed
00:24:17 I find their illogicand foolish emotions
00:24:21 Then transfer out, freak.
00:24:25 Most everyone, and there are exceptions,
00:24:27 but most everyone feelsa little bit like an outsider.
00:24:31 I would argue the mostinteresting people seem to.
00:24:33 So, there's somethingwonderfully comforting
00:24:36 and relatable to know thatSpock felt that way himself.
00:24:41 I grew up as a skinny, nerdy, gay kid in the south,
00:24:46 you know, in the 70's.
00:24:48 Not exactlya comfortable existence.
00:24:50 There's a lot ofinternal conflict.
00:24:52 So the character of Spockfrom the very beginning...
00:24:55 And you know,when I was five,
00:24:57 or seven, I didn't know why,
00:24:59 but I was captivated
00:25:01 by this character that wasbased on internal conflict.
00:25:05 Spock, I think peoplerecognize themselves in him.
00:25:10 He is, um, an outsider.
00:25:15 He is the alien.
00:25:16 I think everyone feelslike an outsider sometimes.
00:25:18 And since he'sa nonhuman outsider,
00:25:21 it's an otherness thateverybody can relate to
00:25:25 People sometimes thinkthey don't belong in a group.
00:25:29 And really that's whatI've found, you know...
00:25:32 I was very tall fromwhen I was young,
00:25:36 and I felt apartfrom other people.
00:25:40 And I really associatedwith that character.
00:25:48 [Leonard Nimoy] I think itwas the very first episode
00:25:49 we were filming after the pilotwhen we started into production.
00:25:52 There was a scene in whichthe ship was being threatened
00:25:56 by some outside problems, outside dangerous force,
00:25:59 and there was a lotof activity on the ship.
00:26:01 The captain was saying,"Do such and such.
00:26:02 Press this button. Do this.Warp three. Get us out of here,"
00:26:06 And Spock had one word to say,and the word was, "Fascinating."
00:26:11 And we're looking at this thingon the screen, you know,
00:26:13 and everyone else is reacting,"Oh, look at it. Blah, blah."
00:26:15 And I got caught upin that energy,
00:26:16 and I said, "Fascinating."
00:26:18 And the director gave mea brilliant note, and he said,
00:26:22 "Be different.Be the scientist.
00:26:25 See it as somethingthat's a curiosity
00:26:30 Fascinating.
00:26:34 Well... a big chunk of thecharacter was born right there.
00:26:39 If I seem insensitive to whatyou're going through, Captain,
00:26:43 understand... it's the way I am.
00:26:47 A lesser actor would say,"Why would I want to play him?
00:26:51 But he has so many emotions.
00:26:52 But he also hasemotional control.
00:26:55 Expresses very littleof what he's feeling,
00:26:57 and I think it's funfor the audience to watch
00:27:00 to see if there's a glimmerof something that pops through.
00:27:03 I had a very interestingconversation
00:27:05 with your father about Spock,
00:27:08 because we weretalking about him
00:27:12 And Leonard said, "I neverplayed him that way.
00:27:15 I always played himas a guy trying to keep
00:27:19 And I thought that was a subtleand ingenious choice,
00:27:24 because it lenta dynamic tension
00:27:28 particularly in the closeups,
00:27:30 of a guy tryingto keep a lid on it.
00:27:31 That thing must be destroyed.
00:27:33 You tried to destroy itonce before, Commodore.
00:27:36 The result was a wreckedship and a dead crew.
00:27:39 I am officially notifying youthat I am exercising my option
00:27:43 under regulationsas a Star Fleet Commodore,
00:27:46 and that I am assumingcommand of the Enterprise.
00:27:54 You can't let himdo this, Spock.
00:27:57 Doctor, you are out of line.
00:27:59 So are you... sir.
00:28:02 Well, Spock?
00:28:04 Unfortunately, Star FleetOrder 104, Section B
00:28:08 Mr. Spock, I order youto assume command
00:28:10 on my personal authorityas captain of the Enterprise.
00:28:13 Commodore Decker, you are relieved of command.
00:28:17 I don't recognizeyour authority
00:28:23 Commodore, I do not wishto place you under arrest.
00:28:29 You're bluffing.
00:28:31 Vulcans never bluff.
00:28:33 I talked about it at the timebeing heavily influenced
00:28:36 by what I saw Harry Belafontedo on stage one night.
00:28:39 He came out on stage, and a spotlight came up on him,
00:28:41 and he was there. He just stood there
00:28:44 Applause. Next song, stood there quietly and sang.
00:28:47 Now he must have beenon stage 10 or 15 minutes.
00:28:49 He was just standing therewith his hands on his thighs,
00:28:52 and sang, and when he made a gesture,
00:28:54 it was likethe whole place shook.
00:28:55 It was like, "Wow!" You know?
00:28:58 It was gigantic.
00:29:00 Wow, what a lesson.
00:29:02 If you are minimal, then that becomes a big deal.
00:29:07 If you are minimal, that becomes a big deal.
00:29:11 [dramatic music]
00:29:12 [screams]
00:29:15 He's gone.
00:29:17 [Leonard Nimoy]You make a comment
00:29:19 that's just as powerfulas throwing punches.
00:29:23 He didn't wield the human sidefrivolously for effect.
00:29:26 Most of the time,it would be contained,
00:29:28 but occasionally,
00:29:30 you know, most notablyat the end of 'Amok Time,'
00:29:33 when he realizes thathe didn't kill Kirk,
00:29:36 there's a sweet momentof like, "Jim!"
00:29:38 Which is just so...It's so earned.
00:29:40 There can be no excusefor the crime of which
00:29:44 I intend to offer no defense.
00:29:45 Furthermore,I shall order Mr. Scott
00:29:47 to take immediate commandof this vessel.
00:29:49 Don't you thinkyou'd better check
00:29:51 Captain!
00:29:53 Jim!
00:30:01 I'm... pleasedto see you, Captain.
00:30:06 You seem... uninjured.
00:30:11 [Leonard Nimoy]What is the purpose of a toy?
00:30:12 To be played with.
00:30:14 [Leonard Nimoy]Therefore, to not play
00:30:17 Illogical.
00:30:18 Damn it, Spock,you're right.
00:30:21 You can look at a lotof progenitor characters
00:30:27 but absolutely, absolutelyone of them is Spock.
00:30:32 And in fact,in the episode
00:30:37 in which Sheldon is interviewedfor this very documentary
00:30:42 that I am currentlyspeaking to you in,
00:30:45 one of the thingsSheldon talks about
00:30:47 is his desire to be Spock.
00:30:49 And that's not a new invention.
00:30:51 That's something that hasexisted for that character
00:30:57 When I was eight years old,Billy sparks cornered me
00:31:01 I asked myself,"What would Spock do?"
00:31:03 Then I grabbed Billyon his shoulder
00:31:05 and performedmy first Vulcan
00:31:08 Did it work?
00:31:09 Oh, no, he broke my collarbone.
00:31:12 - [laughing]- [audience laughing]
00:31:13 So the script was written thenthat Spock comes up behind,
00:31:16 sneaks up behind the mean Kirk,
00:31:18 and hits him on the headwith the butt of a gun.
00:31:21 That's what waswritten in the script.
00:31:23 So I said to the director,"I think we should do
00:31:27 He said, "What do you...What do you mean?
00:31:29 And I said,"Well, Spock is a graduate
00:31:31 of the Vulcan Instituteof Technology..."
00:31:32 [audience laughing]
00:31:34 "...where he tooka number of courses
00:31:38 And the Vulcans havea kind of energy that
00:31:43 which if properly appliedto the appropriate
00:31:46 on the human anatomy, will render a human
00:31:49 - And the guy didn't knowwhat I was talking about.
00:31:52 But I told him,and he knew exactly
00:31:55 And when I came up behind him,and I put my hand on his neck,
00:31:59 He's the one that sold it.
00:32:00 He went like like thatand dropped like a rock.
00:32:03 [audience laughing]
00:32:05 [phaser firing]
00:32:07 There's a multi-legged creaturecrawling on your shoulder.
00:32:18 I'd like you to teachme that some time.
00:32:23 Our minds are merging, Doctor.
00:32:26 Our minds are one.
00:32:30 I feel what you feel.
00:32:33 I know what you know.
00:32:35 I like the fact that Spockcould communicate
00:32:39 through thoughts ratherthan through words.
00:32:45 What in the name of...
00:32:48 The man talked to a rockfor goodness sake
00:32:52 "Oh, she's pregnant."
00:32:53 It's a rock, okay.
00:32:55 That was good, becausethe rock is not going
00:32:59 Think of how many sciencefiction stories in that decade
00:33:04 where you'd meet aliens, and the aliens spoke English.
00:33:08 We didn't think to thinkthat that would not happen.
00:33:13 You've got to crawlbefore you walk.
00:33:15 But "Star Trek" not onlyknew how to crawl,
00:33:19 It was running.
00:33:45 The Vulcan greeting isa wonderful sentiment,
00:33:48 "Live long and prosper."
00:33:50 And this too is somethingthat was contributed
00:33:55 [Leonard Nimoy]We had a wonderful script
00:33:57 by Theodore Sturgeoncalled 'Amok Time.'
00:34:01 We arrive on the planet,
00:34:03 and a procession comes outfrom the city to greet us.
00:34:07 I said to the director,
00:34:08 "I think we shouldhave some kind of
00:34:11 "Asian people bow to each other.
00:34:13 "Military peoplesalute each other.
00:34:16 I think Vulcans should havesome kind of a greeting."
00:34:18 And he said, "What wouldyou like to do?"
00:34:21 And I said, "How about this?"
00:34:25 Where it came from wasfrom my childhood of going
00:34:30 to synagogueon the High Holidays
00:34:34 There's a momentwhere a group of men
00:34:37 cover their headswith their prayer shawls,
00:34:42 My father said, "Don't look."
00:34:44 I'm about eightor nine years old,
00:34:47 And what I saw werethese gentleman out there
00:34:50 had their hands out towardsthe congregation like that,
00:34:57 I found out later this isthe shape of a letter shin
00:35:02 The letter shin isthe first letter
00:35:06 the name of God.
00:35:07 Well, I survived.I peeked, and I survived.
00:35:11 But I was so intriguedwith that gesture,
00:35:14 and I suggested thatwe do that as Vulcans.
00:35:17 Within days afterthat episode
00:35:20 I started getting that gestureback on the streets.
00:35:41 You know, a lot of timespeople ask me what it was
00:35:45 and for the most part, during that period,
00:35:48 Dad was not home much at all.I didn't see him.
00:35:51 He was really focusedon what he was doing
00:35:55 and for the show.
00:35:57 His usual routineduring the week was
00:35:59 He'd come home at 7:00or 8:00 at night,
00:36:03 eat his dinner, memorize his lines.
00:36:05 He'd run the lineswith my mother
00:36:07 and then just go to sleepand start all over again.
00:36:09 So during the week,he wasn't around hardly at all.
00:36:11 We spent a lot of, you know, our, quite a few years--
00:36:15 Actually, from "Star Trek"to "Mission,"
00:36:17 with him not being homeduring the weekdays.
00:36:20 Even when Dad wasaround at home,
00:36:22 oftentimes, he wasvery quiet and remote.
00:36:25 He was still kind ofin his Spock bag,
00:36:27 because he likedto stay in character.
00:36:28 You play a characterlike that...
00:36:31 What? Eight, 10,12 hours a day,

01:34:05 I had just endedan 18-year marriage,
01:34:07 and I had decided to gointo my own 12-step recovery.
01:34:11 And it wasa real difficult time
01:34:14 And basically, for three or four years,
01:34:16 we had very, verylittle communication.
01:34:18 By around 2008,we started to talk again,
01:34:23 and really came back togetherin our relationship
01:34:30 I had met Marthain a doctor's office,

01:35:12 was that in 2004,when I left my 18-year marriage,

01:35:20 I mean, it wasa real low point in my life.
