00:00:31 Okay, so it is 8:30 in the morning.
00:00:35 And, "Why am I awake?" you ask.[clicks tongue]
00:00:37 Well, it's kind of a long story.
00:00:40 Um, I sort of unexpectedlystarted writing the new album,
00:00:46 and, at that point, I was just like,
00:00:48 "Oh, I'm just writing songsin quarantine," and then they're--
00:00:52 It just became an album really quickly
00:00:55 and really, really kind of beautifully, surprisingly.
00:00:59 And, so...
00:01:05 You can't go into studios nowbecause they're all closed,
00:01:07 and I've never recorded anywhere else.
00:01:09 Um, and I know that other peopledo this all the time,
00:01:12 so it's actually not that special, but I'm freaking out over it.
00:01:16 We've built a home studio in my house.
00:01:19 And so, it's, like--I'm gonna do vocals today in my house.
00:01:26 It's-- I'm very excited about it.
00:01:29 [sighs]
00:01:31 Okay, so over there is wheremy recording booth is,

00:01:56 This is crazy.
00:02:39 -First day we've been in the same room.-Cheers. Yeah.
00:02:41 First moment.
00:02:43 That's so weird.
00:02:45 I think when lockdown happened,
00:02:47 I just found myself completely listlessand purposeless and...
00:02:52 That-- Then that was inthe first three days of it.
00:02:54 And then-- And then I remembered
00:02:56 -when we met a year before.-[man] Yeah.
00:02:59 And I'd come to The National show,
00:03:01 and afterward you would come upand talk to me, and you were so nice.
00:03:04 And I was like,"How do you guys write songs?"
00:03:07 You were like, "We all live in differentplaces, so sometimes I'll just make tracks
00:03:11 and send them aroundand send them to Matt."
00:03:15 And I just kind of thought to myself,
00:03:17 "If there was ever an opportunityto work with someone I was such a fan of
00:03:20 who could work like that, that would be so cool."
00:03:23 Then lockdown happened, and I texted you, and I was like,
00:03:26 "Hey. Would you even wanna work?Do you-- Are you in that place right now?"
00:03:30 And I was like, "I don't knowif this is a real text.
00:03:32 -I'm not sure."-[Swift laughs]
00:03:33 Seemed like a bit? Like a friend--
00:03:35 Well, I was like,"Is someone pretending? No."
00:03:37 I feel like it's also--
00:03:38 One of the reasons why it resonateswith me so much is because
00:03:41 in the dismantling of all our systemsof life that we've known in the pandemic,
00:03:46 you're left with two options.
00:03:48 You either cling to itand try to make it work
00:03:50 or to just say, "Well, I guessI'm just gonna chart a new path,"
00:03:53 and kinda get a frontier mentality.
00:03:54 And I think it was such a thrilling useof quarantine to say like,
00:03:58 "Well, everything's a blur,so I'm just gonna rewrite it."
00:04:02 Yeah.
00:04:03 I-- I didn't even tell my labeluntil a week before we put it out
00:04:07 -that it existed.-What was that call like?
00:04:09 It was amazing.
00:04:11 I thought it was gonna be stressful,
00:04:14 and I thought I was gonnahave to kind of stand up,

00:04:32 Yeah, no. I-- I-- I think it's reallyimportant that we play it.
