00:00:25 This is real. This is a robbery.Step away from your cages.
00:00:30 [man 1] He was the most prolificbank robber in the Pacific Northwest.
00:00:35 [woman 1] He keeps changing his disguises.
00:00:36 He seems like he's in a movie, robbing bank after bank.
00:00:41 [man 2] Three or four banks,
00:00:42 one right after the otherin the same evening.
00:00:44 [woman 2] In the FBI,we like to give nicknames to bank robbers.
00:00:48 His moniker was "Hollywood."
00:00:51 Pretty fitting,
00:00:52 especially when we learnedthat he really was inspired
00:00:55 by Bodhi in Point Break.
00:00:56 Why be a servant to the lawwhen you can be its master?
00:01:01 You wanna open the vault,or do you want me to do it?
00:01:03 [woman 2] He'd been successfulfor four years.
00:01:06 That's why he becameour number one priority.
00:01:08 He was not a stupid bank robber.
00:01:10 [man 3] Hollywood was probablyone of the most dangerous people
00:01:13 that I went up against,
00:01:14 because he was a true professional.
00:01:16 [man 2] He wantedto decimate the city of Seattle,
00:01:18 and it was not only doable,it was winnable.
00:01:22 They knew that this mangot millions over the years.
00:01:24 They knew that he humiliated them.
00:01:27 [man 1] When he walkedinto the Lake City branch to rob us,
00:01:30 he walked right past his wanted poster.
00:01:33 Don't panic. This is a robbery.Step away from your counter.
00:01:36 [reporter 1] What happened herereads straight from a movie script.
00:01:39 [reporter 2] He wears heavy makeup, a wig...
00:01:41 [reporter 3] His co-staris this 9 mm. handgun.
00:01:43 [reporter 4] The most prolific bank robberin the country.
00:01:45 He's number oneon the FBI's Most Wanted List.
00:01:49 [man 4] They could not figure outwho this guy was,
00:01:52 and where he was gonna hit next.
00:01:54 [man 5] Was this guy some kind of a ghost?
00:01:57 How does he just slip away like that?
00:01:59 [rock music intensifies]
00:02:18 [music fades]
00:02:24 [suspenseful music playing]
00:02:30 Hollywood was a unique casefor us in Seattle.
00:02:34 We knew from evidence
00:02:36 that he was familiarwith security practices.
00:02:39 He knew how long he hadbefore he had to get out of there.
00:02:43 He was a smart bank robber.
00:02:47 He became our number one priority
00:02:49 after I becamethe supervisor of our task force.
00:02:53 [intriguing music playing]
00:02:54 Shawn Johnson was the FBI agentthat was the lead on the case.
00:02:59 He was like an encyclopedia on Hollywood.
00:03:03 He's number oneas far as, uh, the amount of money
00:03:06 that any bank robber has taken.
00:03:08 Hollywood was a professional bank robber. He worked at it. He perfected his craft.
00:03:14 I think he was enjoying what he did.
00:03:16 I think money was part of it,but at that point in time,
00:03:18 it was just the, uh, adrenaline rush, the challenge.
00:03:23 [Ellen] When I assigned Mike to head upthe Seattle Police response to it,
00:03:28 I knew that it would bean electric relationship.
00:03:32 [man 3] Shawn and I were night and day,oil and water, two different styles.
00:03:37 My partner at the time summed it up.
00:03:40 "Shawn Johnson was the fire, and Mike Magan was the can of gasoline."
00:03:45 I heard one descriptionthat I'm not sure if I agree with,
00:03:47 but I was the brains and he was the brawn.
00:03:49 Don't agree with that 100%,
00:03:51 but the brain partI agree with for myself.
00:03:54 [Mike] Ellen Glasser wasa very talented supervisor
00:03:58 who believed in the "KISS" method:Keep It Simple, Stupid.
00:04:01 [Ellen] As one of the first women agentsin the FBI,
00:04:05 to be able to be supervising
00:04:07 this violent crime squadand the task force
00:04:10 was such an awesome thing for me.
00:04:13 Not only was I in this badass job,
00:04:17 I also was blessedto have four young children,
00:04:20 and so sometimes I feel likeI was two different people.
00:04:25 A lot of the guys called me Agent Mom.
00:04:30 [intriguing music playing]
00:04:35 [man 4] In the '90s,Seattle was a city in major transition.
00:04:40 [intriguing music continues]
00:04:44 You went from a two company town,Weyerhaeuser and Boeing,
00:04:48 to then you add Microsoft,
00:04:49 and then all the companiesthat came around Microsoft.
00:04:53 Bezos from Amazon.
00:04:56 Starbucks was growing like gangbusters.
00:05:00 There was a flood of moneythat came into Seattle.
00:05:04 It was amazinghow many banks were popping up.
00:05:07 I didn't put two and two togetherat the time
00:05:09 that all the cash coming infrom the tech boom was fueling this,
00:05:13 but you could find a bankin the grocery store.
00:05:15 You could find a bankjust about every corner.
00:05:18 [reporter] In Washington state, the number of bank robberies is exploding.
00:05:22 I told my wife,"Don't go into a bank in Seattle."
00:05:24 Chances are it'll get robbed."
00:05:26 [reporter 1] Three men raninto the US Branch Bank in Woodinville
00:05:29 with a shotgun...
00:05:29 [reporter 2] A man enters the bank,
00:05:31 and usually passes a noteto the teller demanding money.
00:05:33 [David] There werea lot of bank robberies.
00:05:35 I don't know that we did one every night, but we did a lot of them.
00:05:38 Let's go to Deborah Horne, who's at the scene with the latest.
00:05:41 That's right, David.Just a very few moments ago...
00:05:43 [woman 1] Seattle was an exciting place.
00:05:45 We were sort ofcoming into our own as a city,
00:05:48 certainly in terms of beingwell-known around the country.
00:05:50 We had Nirvana, so you have grunge.
00:05:53 [David] Grunge, to me,to a certain extent,
00:05:56 was that frustrationthat a lot of people were feeling
00:05:59 about changes that were comingto their communities.
00:06:03 [man 6] The whole grunge thing,it was so anti-corporate
00:06:06 and anti-brandsand big-name and fame was all... [scoffs]
00:06:09 Nobody cared.Nobody wanted any of that shit.
00:06:12 People were literally anti-establishmentfor all the right reasons.
00:06:14 They hated all the oppression, they hated the colonialism,
00:06:17 they hated the attackon human rights and the environment.
00:06:20 And ripping off banks,if they're getting away with it?
00:06:23 People love that.
00:06:24 [reporter] He's robbed 14 banks in Seattlesince, uh, June of 1992.
00:06:27 Wow! He's pretty clever. [chuckles]
00:06:30 Darn clever.
00:06:31 It's the ultimate F-you to the man.
00:06:34 - [woman] It's Mr. Hollywood.- [reporter] Hollywood, right.
00:06:36 We knew that there was a guywith a bunch of disguises
00:06:39 who was robbing banks, not hurting anybody.
00:06:41 No shots were fired.
00:06:43 Sounds very bold. [chuckles]
00:06:45 There may have been some rooting for him,and people talk about Robin Hood...
00:06:52 [Jimmy] The mystique of the bank robbergoes back to the Robin Hood thing.
00:06:55 You steal from the richand give to the poor.
00:06:58 Duh. How noble is that?
00:07:01 [Ellen] He was kind of legendaryin terms of bank robbers.
00:07:05 [Mike] But in terms of who Hollywood was,we couldn't have been more wrong.
00:07:10 [birds chirping]
00:07:17 Hey, Bubba!
00:07:21 [man 7] Wow, a man with his shirt off.
00:07:24 Come on back!
00:07:28 [man 7] Let's go, boys. Come on.
00:07:31 - You still filming?- [man 7] We're filming this whole trip.
00:07:35 You gotta hold the camera steady.
00:07:37 [man 7] That's a little easiersaid than done, man.
00:07:40 As you can see, we're deep in the forest.
00:07:46 And there's not a whole lot of light.
00:07:53 [pensive music playing]
00:07:58 - Okay, Tarzan. What do you want to do?- Go up top.
00:08:01 - [man 7] Go up top?- Yeah.
00:08:04 [man 7] We're goinginto Scurlock's domain.
00:08:07 What's the elevation here, mate?
00:08:09 - [Scurlock] 75 feet.- [man 7] 75 feet above what?
00:08:11 [Scurlock] The floor of the cedars.
00:08:14 Down there.
00:08:18 [man 7] Tell us the story, mate.
00:08:19 How long did it take you? What's the deal here?
00:08:21 Took me about two weeksto build this whole thing.
00:08:23 - [man 7] Two weeks to build this.- Six stories.
00:08:27 Fifty-eight tons of wood.
00:08:29 Did a little work.Kind of ate breakfast before I did it.
00:08:32 [man 7 laughs] Okay.
00:08:36 Okay, no, it really took maybe...I don't know.
00:08:40 - Three or four months?- [man 7] Three or four months.
00:08:42 [tranquil music playing]
00:08:47 [woman 3] The Treehousewas a really amazing, amazing place.
00:08:51 A place you could goto get out of the norm of society.
00:08:57 [woman 4] The first time I wentto the Treehouse, Scott answered the door.
00:09:01 He was stripped nakedexcept his tool belt.
00:09:06 I'd never had anybodyanswer the door quite like that,
00:09:08 but I pretendedthat it was an everyday occurrence.
00:09:12 You'd see furniture, like you would in a normal house,
00:09:16 and you'd walk across the deck, and here was a toilet, here was a shower.
00:09:22 It was like a real bathroom,
00:09:24 except you hada wonderful outdoor experience.
00:09:28 [Elizabeth] It was built aroundseven trees and it was really well-made.
00:09:32 It was like cedar boardsand picture windows.
00:09:35 It was an extravagant tree house.
00:09:38 There was a huge oven range,
00:09:40 and we carriedthis oven range up the stairs,
00:09:43 70 feet to the first floor.
00:09:46 [man 2] My brotherwas good friends with Scott,
00:09:48 and he said he'd hire meto come out and build his house.
00:09:51 And I said, "Yeah, why not?"
00:09:53 We did someof the most insane construction.
00:09:56 We would be hangingfrom ropes from our ankles
00:09:58 to be able to nail itand bolt it in place. And...
00:10:02 It was insanely dangerous.
00:10:03 All of it was dangerous, but we didn't care.
00:10:06 [gentle music playing]
00:10:10 The Treehouse was Scott'sinner personality that came to life.
00:10:14 He was safe.It was his harbor. It was his anchor.
00:10:18 He was free from it all.
00:10:22 [Scott] I'm sitting at my desk,40 feet in the trees.
00:10:26 The deck extends off the rimlike a ballerina's tutu in full twirl.
00:10:31 It's wide enough in placesto bake in the sun's rays,
00:10:35 and maybe catch a wink of sleepif you're not scared of rolling off.
00:10:39 [man 7] What's going on?
00:10:39 [Scott] I like just sitting on the edge, gazing across the trees at Mount Rainier.
00:10:43 [man 7] Talk to us.
00:10:44 [Scott] I get a feelingof subtle exhilaration.
00:10:48 I want a lot out of this life.
00:10:51 I think it will be a long search
00:10:53 before I find the placewhere God wants me.
00:10:56 My mind is like an undisciplined childthat has gone wild.
00:11:00 I'll just have to catch it.
00:11:07 Everybody loved Scott.Everybody loved the Treehouse.
00:11:11 The two were connected.
00:11:14 We clicked right awaywhen we first met in school
00:11:17 and we just both had a lot of energy, wild and free.
00:11:20 We'd like to drink beer.
00:11:23 Mark Biggins is an interesting character.
00:11:25 He and Scottwent to Evergreen College together.
00:11:29 [Elizabeth] People that came to Evergreenwere in some ways misfits.
00:11:34 Me included.
00:11:35 People are pretty progressive.
00:11:37 It wasn't like people taking crazy drugsand drinking and being crazy in that way.
00:11:42 It was very earthy.
00:11:43 Playing drums and taking mushroomsand sitting around fires.
00:11:47 It was also a very tight community.
00:11:51 [Mark] Fate just threw us together.
00:11:53 Scott was this wild and free guy.
00:11:56 Even more sothan the other Evergreen students
00:11:59 who were considered wild and free.
00:12:01 Mark is just a really tender, gentle soul, you know?
00:12:06 He played guitar and wrote poetry.
00:12:11 But he was having a really hard time.He was struggling.
00:12:14 So I think Scotty really helped him out.
00:12:16 [Mark] I called him on the phone, and I said, "Man, my marriage is over."
00:12:20 "I don't know what I'm gonna do,where I'm gonna go."
00:12:23 And he says, "Well, get on up here!Move in with me."
00:12:27 [Steve] Mark Biggins was a big, gruff man.
00:12:30 He smoked Chesterfield straights. He probably did a pack or two packs a day.
00:12:34 He would knock bourbons downlike it was no big deal.
00:12:37 That was the bond between him and Scott.
00:12:39 Biggins could drink Scott to hell.
00:12:49 [Mark] I lived at the Treehousefor many years. So did my daughter.
00:12:53 And perfect strangerswould come knocking on the door
00:12:56 and they'd say, uh,
00:12:59 "Oh, we heard there's thisreally cool tree house on this property."
00:13:02 Or "Can we go see it?"And we'd have to turn them away.
00:13:05 I mean, it got so bad we actually builta gate across the driveway.
00:13:11 And the Treehousewas not built by Scott alone,
00:13:14 even thoughit's been quoted in many places,
00:13:17 but, uh, dozens of peopleworked on that place.
00:13:23 [woman 5] My brother Scottwas never gonna be controlled
00:13:25 and he wanted to be free.
00:13:27 He was an adrenaline junkie. He loved doing daring things.
00:13:32 We're sitting at 60 feet up in the airat six stories and
00:13:35 this is the first timeI've ever done this.
00:13:37 [laughter]
00:13:39 [Mark] So he's gonna do approximatelya 100-foot climb upside down.
00:13:43 Anytime go, Rambo, Tarzan.
00:13:46 [Scott] Woo!
00:13:50 - Whoa!- [Mark] Oh! [laughs]
00:13:54 He just kept wanting to gohigher and higher and higher
00:13:57 and he needed more and more and more.
00:13:59 [Mark] Right now,if he slipped he's gonna fall
00:14:04 60 feet to the ground.
00:14:05 [Scott] This is hard!
00:14:06 [Mark] I told you. This is a death act, my friend.
00:14:08 [Suzanne] He was, uh, an adventurer.
00:14:10 He loved the excitement of life, and wanted new things and new experiences.
00:14:16 But he made certain pivotal choices
00:14:19 that led him into directionshe couldn't turn around and back out of.
00:14:25 [intriguing music playing]
00:14:35 [Scott] In my studies,I've gotten on the wrong track,
00:14:38 delving into areasnot good for my spiritual growth.
00:14:44 A voice speaks loud and clear.
00:14:46 "Remember what you are here for."
00:14:49 I understand, but do not change course.
00:14:53 He was always in pursuitof something of his own world.
00:15:02 [Mark] When I first met him,
00:15:03 he was aspiringto get a degree in medicine,
00:15:06 but that fell by the waysideonce he worked in the chemistry lab
00:15:11 and he saw an opportunityto make a lot of money.
00:15:21 Scott was the first person in my lifeI had ever known to produce crystal meth.
00:15:26 He would, at nighttime,
00:15:27 go up through the ceilingsand crawl into the laboratory.
00:15:31 Scotty's professors discovered him. They kicked him off the campus.
00:15:35 Said, "Don't you ever, ever, ever, evershow your face here again."
00:15:39 He was smart enough to have been a doctor.
00:15:43 He was one course shortof graduating in chemistry and biology.
00:15:46 He would have been pre-med.
00:15:48 But he didn't wanna be.
00:15:49 That was not who he was and he knew that.
00:15:53 And then he just continuedright on down that road.
00:15:58 [Steve] This grew and grew and grewand he became so prolific,
00:16:01 and his product was so absolutely pure.
00:16:04 If you were ever to try his stuff,
00:16:06 I'm telling you,it was something unbelievable.
00:16:10 He did have a reputation for producingsome of the finest substance, uh, around.
00:16:17 I never heard anybody say... saythat somebody else's meth was better.
00:16:23 Scott's use of crystal methwas very moderate and controlled.
00:16:29 He just enjoyed itand it inspired him for creativity.
00:16:34 [Steve] As time went on, he boughta piece of property with a barn on it.
00:16:37 And so I went out thereto renovate the barn.
00:16:40 In the loft of the barn,he had his whole laboratory set up.
00:16:45 Captain Pat was the front man.He was the finance man.
00:16:49 The only times they metwere in the forest,
00:16:51 transferring product and money.
00:16:54 When Scott would bring180 lb. to Captain Pat,
00:16:56 he would give him $2 million.
00:16:59 [Mark] Pat was the onewho introduced Scott to the meth world.
00:17:03 The Captain, that was Pat's nickname.
00:17:05 He'd take it down to Barstowand sell it to the Hells Angels.
00:17:09 And then Scottwould come back to the Treehouse
00:17:11 with these boxes full of $20 bills.
00:17:14 Scott and I would sit and count it out. We'd be up all night counting money.
00:17:18 But this got dangerous.I mean, really dangerous.
00:17:22 Captain Pat was murderedby some person who was trying to rob him
00:17:25 and he was murdered in his sleep.
00:17:28 Scott was devastated when he heard.
00:17:32 But that's what people do in that world, and he didn't want to be any part of it.

00:35:00 That's all you gotta do.
00:35:02 There was no hesitation on my partto help Scott out.
00:35:04 You know,it was just a thing among friends.
00:35:08 [Steve] One of Scott's main methodologieswas to repeat robbing the same bank.
00:35:12 Nobody's gonna believethat you're gonna come right back
00:35:14 and do the same thing againwithin a few days.
00:35:21 The first thing we'd do,we'd dump all the money out
00:35:23 and then we would go throughwith ultraviolet lights
00:35:26 any money that looked likeit might be marked.
00:35:29 New money was the most dangerous
00:35:30 'cause you have sequential serial numbers,so we would scatter those around.
00:35:36 We would lock up all of the equipmentin military canisters
00:35:40 that we would bury in the ground.
00:35:42 Then we took the clothesback into the forest
00:35:44 and we had a pitwhere we burned everything.
00:35:47 After that, I had to go launder the money.
00:35:49 ["I Want More" by Can playing]
00:35:51 Scott did a lot of sportsbook gambling.
00:35:53 And the laundering of the money,he thought of that.
00:35:56 That was his creation. It's an ingenious creation.
00:36:01 You place the same amount of moneyon both teams that are playing
00:36:03 at two different casinos,
00:36:05 and one of the teams is gonna win.
00:36:09 So you end up getting back all your money
00:36:11 except for what the house receiveson the losing team,
00:36:13 which is 5%.
00:36:16 We weren't losing anything, really.
00:36:17 ["I Want More" continues]
00:36:19 Scott did a lot with his money
00:36:21 and he just lived his lifethe way he wanted to live it.
00:36:24 ["I Want More" continues]
00:36:28 Travel, seeing the world, meeting different people.
00:36:30 That's what he loved.
00:36:33 [Scott] I have been realizing latelythe virtues of traveling alone.
00:36:37 All my wildest experienceshave happened while I'm alone.
00:36:40 [T.J.] Scott was definitelya man of mystery.
00:36:43 He would disappear for a while.
00:36:46 One time I thought maybe he was CIA.Maybe he was a pot grower.
00:36:52 [Jimmy] I never really asked himwhat he did for money.
00:36:55 He must be a contractor. I don't know. That's why he was so handy building.
00:37:04 I found out that he was really interestedin stopping the logging of the forest.
00:37:10 [Steve] He worked with Earth First,
00:37:11 and he would give donation moneyto these environmentalists.
00:37:14 And I said, "Why do you do that, Scott? Why waste money on these hippies?"
00:37:18 [Alban] Scott did view himselfas a Robin Hood figure.
00:37:22 And I think it was, uh, evidentin the way he acquired the money
00:37:26 and then also the way he dispersed it.
00:37:29 [Jimmy] In terms of him beinga Robin Hood figure, I know that was true.
00:37:32 He gave money to me. He gave moneyto other people and other things.
00:37:35 I saw him give money away.
00:37:38 [Steve] He helped people.
00:37:39 They needed something, he'd give thema few thousand dollars for whatever.
00:37:43 He spread the money around.
00:37:46 [Mark] It's a funny relationshipyou have with money.
00:37:48 You didn't earn it.You stole it. You took it.
00:37:50 Spend it freely, and then go get more.
00:37:52 [Scott] Mmm, mmm.
00:37:53 [Steve] He wasn't Robin Hood.
00:37:55 If you look at Robin Hood,it was idealistic.
00:37:57 He stole from the rich and gave, you know, all of that nonsense.
00:38:00 And Scott wasn't like that.
00:38:01 He helped people that he knew
00:38:03 if he needed somethingin the future to be done,
00:38:06 he could call on themand they would do it.
00:38:10 [suspenseful music playing]
00:38:18 [Steve] Regardlessof how successful it all was,
00:38:21 there's a certain pointwhere you're challenging fate
00:38:24 and it doesn't always turn outthe way you want it to turn out.
00:38:28 [suspenseful music continues]
00:38:29 One robbery we had to abort
00:38:31 because a customer recognized himas he was walking in.
00:38:36 I got the dispatch call, and I had to call him out.
00:38:40 [Steve on radio] We're out.Let's go, let's go.
00:38:43 [Steve] For the next one,as soon as he got in his getaway car,
00:38:46 the dye pack blew upand he threw that whole thing out.
00:38:49 [suspenseful music continues]
00:38:52 [tires screech]
00:38:54 We found the vehiclejust blocks away from the bank.
00:38:58 I sat in that station wagonat the scene for a couple of minutes,
00:39:02 just absorbing that.
00:39:04 That was the closestI had come to him at that point in time,
00:39:07 sitting in that carwaiting for the next robbery to happen.
00:39:11 We were able to trace itto previous owners.
00:39:14 Through that, we were ableto develop composite sketches
00:39:17 of individuals who had bought cars.
00:39:20 [Ellen] We had a police profiler come in
00:39:22 and brief all of the peoplethat were working on the case
00:39:25 who suggestedthat he might be a police officer.
00:39:28 We thought that because of the skillthat he had when he was robbing banks.
00:39:32 There was suspicionthat Detective Magan had
00:39:35 that Hollywood might be a police officer.
00:39:37 Shawn Johnson had the beliefthat Hollywood could be a police officer.
00:39:42 Did I believe he was a police officer? No.
00:39:44 I didn't buy that theory.
00:39:46 We definitely considered it,
00:39:48 and we thought thatthat made him more dangerous.
00:39:51 We wanted to get the word outso we could solve this case.
00:39:54 So we used the media,
00:39:55 and that was partof a very carefully laid-out plan.
00:39:59 We told you abouta bank robber nicknamed Hollywood.
00:40:02 He's number oneon the FBI's Most Wanted List.
00:40:05 [reporter] Disguises are the reasonthe FBI dubbed this man Hollywood.
00:40:08 He's successfully hitmore than a dozen banks
00:40:10 in the past four years.
00:40:12 [David] It changed the story dramatically
00:40:14 when the FBI came outwith this nickname of Hollywood,
00:40:17 because we knew that they were havinga hard time tracking this guy,
00:40:21 and it seemed to be on a cycle.
00:40:22 Like every six months,a bank was being hit,
00:40:24 and it became, "Was this Hollywood again?"
00:40:26 [reporter] FBI agentShawn Johnson's mission
00:40:29 is to find anyonewho knows anything about Hollywood.
00:40:31 I think initially,we'll start off, uh, door-to-door,
00:40:35 half of us on one side, half on the other.
00:40:37 [David] You didn't usually seean FBI agent walk into a neighborhood
00:40:40 and say, "Can you tell me anythingabout this bank robbery?"
00:40:43 That was wild, to see an agent, you know, being so open.
00:40:48 Also a clue that they had no clue.
00:40:52 Maybe I wanted him to knowthat I was there, you know?
00:40:56 I was there too. So here's me on TV.
00:40:59 [mysterious music playing]
00:41:02 [Mike] Most suspects followed their media.
00:41:04 In fact, I think they actually loved it.
00:41:07 [Steve] The first timewe heard about Hollywood
00:41:09 was from the two-page articlewith Shawn Johnson.
00:41:11 He was saying,
00:41:12 "Somebody out there knows who this man isand we need your help."
00:41:15 - [reporter 1] His nickname is Hollywood.- [reporter 2] Hollywood wears makeup...
00:41:19 [Steve] That nameinfluenced him immensely.
00:41:21 I think it built him up even more.
00:41:23 I think it excited him,
00:41:24 without him saying it or acknowledging it,but I know his personality.
00:41:28 Deep inside, he was proud.
00:41:29 [Ellen] We thought he would rob againif he was getting so much attention.
00:41:37 [tense music playing]
00:41:41 [Steve] Each robbery was an opportunityto try something new.
00:41:45 For the getaways, we would try to figureout what the FBI would expect us to do,
00:41:50 and then we would just do the opposite.
00:41:52 For the bank we wanted to do, to get away,
00:41:54 you either go down Madisontoward the police coming in,
00:41:57 or you have to go all around the lake.
00:42:00 So I said, "Why don't you get into the vanand just stay there?"
00:42:03 "And I'll go to a restaurant,
00:42:04 and I'll sit and wait for the heat to go."
00:42:07 "When the police are gone,I'll get back out in my car,
00:42:09 and I'll radio you and let you know,uh, that it's clear to come out."
00:42:14 He had a van and we had it retrofittedso he could get under the floor.
00:42:17 So if they shined lights in there, they couldn't see him.
00:42:20 [tense music continues]
00:42:24 I told Scott, I said,"Man, this is gonna be big."
00:42:26 "I just had a dream last night."
00:42:28 "We're gonna haveover a quarter of a million dollars
00:42:30 and you're gonna get out safely."
00:42:32 "It's not gonna be a problem."
00:42:34 [tense music continues]
00:42:42 [sirens wail]
00:42:45 [Steve] It was a good 45 minutesI was in the restaurant.
00:42:50 There was four or five cop cars out there,
00:42:52 and I could just look out the window
00:42:54 and see when it was dispersedand finished.
00:42:57 I arrive at the scene and I'm thinking,
00:43:02 "Is this guy some kind of a ghost? How does he just slip away like that?"
00:43:07 [tense music continues]
00:43:12 [Steve] One thing he discoveredwhile he was in the van
00:43:14 was the condensation from his breathing.
00:43:17 If the police had been aware,
00:43:18 they would see thatand think there was someone in there.
00:43:23 I went overto a wine shop across the street
00:43:25 and when I came out of the wine shop, they had all gone.
00:43:27 And I went to the car
00:43:29 and I got my radio outand I radioed Scott,
00:43:32 and I said, "Boss, let's go."
00:43:42 It was this cat and mouse game.
00:43:44 It was clear that policeand law enforcement were frustrated.
00:43:47 They couldn't figure outwho this person was.
00:43:50 [reporter 1] What everyoneseems to remember
00:43:52 is how he orders people aroundand threatens to shoot them.
00:43:55 [reporter 2] FBI agents are frustrated
00:43:56 that Hollywood has been ableto get away with so much for so long.
00:44:00 They fear that he will turn violentbefore he's caught.
00:44:03 [David] I think that's what changedthe Hollywood story,
00:44:06 is that, until we startedto hear from the tellers
00:44:09 who told these horrifying stories,he hadn't hurt anybody.
00:44:12 [tense music playing]
00:44:14 [Shawn] He got more desperate sometimes. He tried to get in the vault.
00:44:18 The vault tellers weren't thereto let him in, he got real upset.
00:44:21 He said, "It's Christmas.I don't want to kill anybody,"
00:44:23 and used a stun gunon one of the employees.
00:44:26 So he was willing to use weapons.
00:44:28 I've seen people crying.
00:44:31 I mean, just very emotional, and you're trying to get to the point
00:44:34 where you calm them down a bitto... to talk to them, what happened.
00:44:38 It was unlike any robbery that any of themhad ever gone through before.
00:44:42 [bank teller] We could not tellfrom one second to the next
00:44:45 what he was likely to do.
00:44:46 He was extremely threatening.
00:44:49 [Ellen] Bank robberyis not a victimless crime.
00:44:52 The people that arein the bank are traumatized,
00:44:55 tellers are traumatized.
00:44:57 When you have a gun pointed at your face, where people threaten to kill you,
00:45:01 these take a toll on human beings.
00:45:04 I've been robbed 14 times,
00:45:06 and one of thosewas the Hollywood bank robber.
00:45:10 He commanded this presence,
00:45:12 and he told everyone to freezeand everyone froze.
00:45:16 It's unusual for a robberto have that much control.
00:45:20 It doesn't ever leave you.
00:45:23 You can go on with your life, but it doesn't ever leave you. Ever.
00:45:28 [bank teller] There's got to be somethingmore that we can do to stop these people.
00:45:31 Somebody's going to get hurt.
00:45:33 He thought that he wasjust having the greatest time,
00:45:37 living his best life.
00:45:40 But for him to thinkthat he was gonna get away with this
00:45:44 was just a false premise.
00:45:46 [laughter]
00:45:47 [Steve] When you stepinto the world we were living,
00:45:50 you have no ideathe toll it's gonna bring upon you.
00:45:52 It's impossible.
00:45:55 After so many years of bank robberies,
00:45:57 you are no longer the same personthat you were before you began.
00:46:03 [Alban] Scott started to get stressed.
00:46:06 He was no longerthe casual, happy-go-lucky person.
00:46:09 That person was gone.
00:46:12 [T.J.] The vibearound the Treehouse changed.
00:46:14 He became more closed off,and more isolated, and way less social.
00:46:21 [Steve] Scott had melive up at the front house
00:46:24 to keep people out of there.
00:46:26 More and more, his life was becoming secretive
00:46:29 and he needed to have people away.
00:46:31 He didn't want people around, seeing what he was doing.
00:46:36 [Mark] Once you do cross the Rubiconand start living that life,
00:46:40 you have to lieto everybody about everything.
00:46:44 Everybody you care about.Everybody you meet.
00:46:49 [Scott] I keep goingin the wrong direction.
00:46:51 I start things and then stopbefore the great benefit can be gotten.
00:46:55 Many females have feltmy no-follow-through.
00:46:59 Do I just want to want?Is that why I get no satisfaction?
00:47:04 I one time kidded with himwhen I'd observe him with certain women.
00:47:08 I'd say, "What do you do? Treat womenlike condiments? Give me a break."
00:47:12 [T.J.] Is he single or what? You got women in your bed?
00:47:16 [Scott] Things don't computelike they used to.
00:47:18 I usually feel free and secureabout my plans in life,
00:47:22 but now I'm beginning to feel captured.
00:47:26 [T.J.] Cheers!
00:47:27 [Suzanne] He showed up at the door,"Gotta talk to you."
00:47:31 And as we're sitting there,he's sitting across from me
00:47:34 and he just starts to cry, like tears streaming down his face.
00:47:37 And he says,"Suze, I don't know what's going on."
00:47:40 "But when I look in the mirror, the face looking back at me isn't my own."
00:47:44 "What is that?"
00:47:46 I knew at that pointhe was really in trouble.
00:47:49 This light and dark tussle in him,he was losing the battle.
00:47:54 [Steve] He started drinking more and moreand more to subdue the anxieties.
00:47:59 But Scott wanted one final act,
00:48:02 and that was three or four banks,
00:48:03 one right after the otherin the same evening.
00:48:06 We get 10 to 15 million dollarsand we call it a day.
00:48:09 I go about my business, you go about yours.
00:48:12 [tense music playing]
00:48:13 We had three banks figured out.
00:48:16 First, you hit a small bank,go in and get out,
00:48:20 and you don't care about the money.
00:48:21 You just care aboutdiverting the police to that small bank.
00:48:24 Then you go back and hit a bigger bank.
00:48:27 Then by the time they get there, there's a third one.
00:48:29 I mean, what are they gonna do?
00:48:31 We wanted to decimate the city of Seattle,
00:48:34 and it was not only doable,it was winnable.
00:48:36 [tense music playing]
00:48:39 [Shawn] I was getting a bit frustratedduring this investigation.
00:48:42 We had come up witha couple of getaway vehicles and such,
00:48:45 but it was getting closebut not close enough.
00:48:48 I got tired of waiting, just reacting to his bank robberies.
00:48:53 I started digging back through the files,
00:48:55 back through the MO,
00:48:58 the time of day, the day of the week,
00:49:00 location of the banks, how much money he was taking.
00:49:04 I knew he had an ego.
00:49:06 That's why I knew he was gonna come backat some point in time.
00:49:10 I sat down and did the math,
00:49:13 figured out that he was going throughapproximately $21,000 a month.
00:49:19 So with that in mind,
00:49:20 I predicted that he was going to hitone of three days
00:49:24 the following year in January.
00:49:27 I knew that he would be back.
00:49:29 Certain locations I thoughtwere likely targets.
00:49:33 It was a waiting gamefor them to come back,
00:49:34 and that we were in the right spotat the right time.
00:49:43 [Steve] After the last big robbery,we took a year off.
00:49:46 We were finally planningto take down three banks,
00:49:49 but we needed another person
00:49:50 because of the logisticsof taking down these banks.
00:49:58 [Mark] After the first bank robbery,
00:49:59 I went right to Montanaand was hiding out there
00:50:02 and then Scott showed upand drew me back into it.
00:50:07 Scott's been goinginto the banks by himself,
00:50:09 and he was having troublewith crowd control.
00:50:12 So he told me, "All you have to dois stand in the lobby."
00:50:15 "Make sure nobody leaves. That's all you gotta do."
00:50:20 [Shawn] A year had passedsince I made those predictions
00:50:22 on three days in Januarythat he was gonna hit.
00:50:24 - [police radio chattering]- So myself and a task force member
00:50:28 surveilled banks I figuredwere logical targets for Hollywood.
00:50:31 First day, nothing happens.
00:50:34 Second day, nothing happened.
00:50:38 The third day, I was out therewaiting for him by myself.
00:50:42 [Steve] With Mark back,we decided to hit one bank,
00:50:44 just to get the feel of it,before we hit three.
00:50:46 [tense music playing]
00:50:49 [Mark] My second robberywas so different than the first.
00:50:53 More under control, went a lot smoother.
00:50:55 It was more like a job than an adventure.
00:50:58 [tense music continues]
00:50:59 [indistinct radio chatter]
00:51:04 [Shawn] I knew immediatelybased on the description,
00:51:07 "Oh shit, it's Hollywood."
00:51:08 He's hitting another bank a mile upfrom where I was waiting for him.
00:51:11 He came back just as I said.He came back the third day.
00:51:17 I was getting closer and I felt like,"I'm just a couple of minutes behind you."
00:51:20 "Not months, not weeks.Just a few minutes behind you now."
00:51:23 [tires screech]
00:51:25 [Shawn] I proceeded up to the bank.We had secured the scene.
00:51:29 I was the first follow-up personat the scene.
00:51:33 And I get to the bankand I'm looking at Shawn Johnson,
00:51:35 like, "How did you get here so fast?"
00:51:37 And I found outthat he and FBI agents only
00:51:41 were running their own surveillancelooking for Hollywood.
00:51:45 He cut everybody else outon the task force.
00:51:48 Other task force officers decidedthat what I was doing was crazy.
00:51:53 "He's not gonna come back. He's not gonna be here."
00:51:55 [Ellen] I remember howthat kind of ramped up everybody's energy
00:51:59 to work this case,
00:52:00 'cause it had been some gapsince his previous robbery.
00:52:04 [Mike] Everybody on the task forcethought at that point
00:52:06 that something badwas definitely gonna happen.
00:52:10 And to Ellen's credit,
00:52:12 she saw that this casewas spinning a little bit out of control,
00:52:16 and we needed to put an end to it.
00:52:23 [Ellen] Hollywood was kind of predictable
00:52:25 in terms of the times of dayand where he would rob.
00:52:28 We hatched a plan to do surveillances,
00:52:30 hoping that one of our guyswould be out on the street
00:52:34 when he robbed a bank.
00:52:35 We needed the Seattle Police Department. We needed their special patrol unit.
00:52:39 We needed aerial resources.
00:52:42 - We added extra FBI resources.- [camera clicks]
00:52:44 To get all of that in linewas an absolutely Herculean effort.
00:52:50 So we made a commitmentto bring all these resources together
00:52:54 for an indefinite period.
00:52:59 This was a time whenone of the new techniques was ProNet.
00:53:03 It was using these electronic tracersthat were attached to money.
00:53:08 They would shoot their signal to towers.
00:53:10 And so then you had to havea mechanism to follow the tags.
00:53:14 So we had to put 'emin a lot of police cars.
00:53:16 [Shawn] I had to go back againthrough the robberies to date
00:53:20 to find out logical targetsthat I would hit again
00:53:23 to put devices into the banks.
00:53:25 [Ellen] We put two of these electronictracers in as many banks as we could.
00:53:31 [Mike] Everything revolved around time.
00:53:34 The more of these tracking devicesthat were in the vault,
00:53:36 the more time it allowed me to get there.
00:53:39 [Al Pacino] If it's between youand some poor bastard
00:53:42 whose wife you're gonna turn into a widow,
00:53:46 brother, you are going down.
00:53:50 [Mark] Scott and I had watched Heat, which was a pretty intense movie.
00:53:53 - [screaming]- [grunting]
00:53:56 [man] Don't move! Don't fucking move.
00:53:58 [Mark] The bank robbing scenesin that movie are spot-on.
00:54:01 And then the shootoutjust scared the bejesus out of us.
00:54:08 I remember Scott and Ilooking at each other, just going,
00:54:11 "Oh my goodness, what if that happened?"
00:54:17 And that was the game we were playing.
00:54:21 It was a real possibility, which put the fear of God into us.
00:54:25 Fear of our own mortality.
00:54:27 [dramatic music playing]
00:54:30 Throughout my time working on this case,
00:54:32 I always thoughtthere was a great possibility
00:54:35 that someone could get hurt.
00:54:37 I've been closeto other bank robberies before in the FBI
00:54:41 where colleagues of mine were killed
00:54:44 in a major shootout in Miami in 1986.
00:54:49 [reporter] In a firefightlasting over four minutes,
00:54:51 two special agents of the FBI were slainand five other agents were wounded.
00:54:56 We may not have known who Hollywood was,
00:55:00 but what we did know is thatif we faced off with him in the street,
00:55:03 he would not go down without a fight.
00:55:08 [somber music playing]
00:55:12 [Steve] At some pointin the middle of everything,
00:55:14 I had a very vivid dream.
00:55:18 I was crawling up a beach from the water
00:55:20 and a shark had just bittenboth of my legs off.
00:55:23 [somber music continues]
00:55:28 [Steve] I took the dream as advice.
00:55:31 The advice was to get out of it.
00:55:35 I could sense that Scott feltthat there was something looming.
00:55:41 We took hikes up in the Olympics. The Olympics were special to Scott.
00:55:46 That was our time of peace.
00:55:49 We cleared our mind of the city,of the chaos,
00:55:52 and we would go up there in natureand we'd challenge ourselves.
00:55:57 On the top of Mount Washington,
00:55:58 Scott said to me, "Listen. No matter what, let your own hand be the hand of fate,
00:56:02 and never let your enemydictate your fate."
00:56:06 "You make sure you're in controlof what you do with your life."
00:56:11 [Alban] One bank was not enough for Scott.
00:56:13 He wanted to do three banks.
00:56:15 I said, "You're nuts, man."
00:56:17 I talked to Steve and I told him,
00:56:19 "Listen, man. I think this guyis getting out of hand here."
00:56:23 "And I'm going to Californiaand I suggest you come with me."
00:56:26 And he actually was thinking about it,
00:56:29 except he didn't want to let Scott down.
00:56:33 [Steve] With the final robbery,I knew I had to go through with it,
00:56:36 because something had to culminate.Something had to finalize itself.
00:56:41 The last time that I saw Scott,
00:56:43 I had this really bad dream.
00:56:47 The dream involved guns, a shootout.
00:56:50 It was in Seattle. People were running.
00:56:52 And I'm telling him this dreamand he got all white.
00:56:57 He took a big breath and says,"You're probably not gonna see me again."
00:57:00 "I'm probably gonna goto the Seychelle Islands."
00:57:03 And I go, "Really?"I said, "You're gonna come back, right?"
00:57:06 He goes, "I don't thinkyou're gonna see me again."
00:57:09 [somber music continues]
00:57:13 [Scott] I walk into the night and screamat God to make his message known to me.
00:57:18 God is not respondingand I sense rejection.
00:57:22 It is a time of painand anger and resentment.
00:57:26 Where the fuck do I go from here,oh great winged white horseman in my mind?
00:57:32 This will be the last entryfor a long time.
00:57:34 [music fades]
00:57:41 [Steve] We prepared for yearsto rob these banks.
00:57:44 And about two weeks before Thanksgiving,
00:57:47 Scott said there's good news and bad news.
00:57:50 The bad news is that they now haveProNet tags in the vault money.
00:57:54 There is no way to beat the tagsin time to do our original plan.
00:57:58 So we had to abandonthe multiple banks scenario.
00:58:00 [tense music playing]
00:58:02 The good news is,we take this bank up on 125th Street.
00:58:06 Mustang told us that there should be
00:58:08 five to seven million dollarswithin the bank.
00:58:11 So our whole game plan changed.
00:58:15 But the tracers we had to figure out,and we had to figure out quickly.
00:58:19 We did a bankjust to see how we had to deal with it.
00:58:23 We de-disguised Scott into a ski mask.
00:58:26 We didn't want them to thinkit was Hollywood taking out the tracers.
00:58:30 And I said, "Listen, just go in there.Don't even fuck around with the tellers."
00:58:36 "Go into the vault, get the money,
00:58:37 and when you come out,we'll have the tracers."
00:58:40 "Then we'll find outhow they're planted in the money."
00:58:44 All of these tagswere put between $20 bills,
00:58:48 because you can fan it,you can feel this lump.
00:58:52 In a very short time, we got twothat we discarded out the window.
00:58:56 And then after all of that,
00:58:57 we both felt comfortable and confidentthat we could actually do it.
00:59:05 [tense music playing]
00:59:14 [Shawn] I woke up the morningof Thanksgiving Eve 1996.
00:59:18 My wife says to me that morningbefore I leave, "This is the day."
00:59:21 "This is the day. You're catching Hollywood today."
00:59:23 And I'm thinking, "Well,yeah, I... I don't know about that."
00:59:27 [Mike] Thanksgiving weekwas always a short week
00:59:29 and most of the peoplearen't even in the office.
00:59:33 [Steve] We wake up Thanksgiving Eve.
00:59:35 We look out the windows. The rain was pounding.
00:59:38 It was gray and dark.It was beautiful. Wonderful.
00:59:40 Perfect day for what we were doing.
00:59:42 [tense music continues]
00:59:43 I'm in there cleaning, setting things up, making it perfect.
00:59:48 [Mark] We go to the makeup room
00:59:49 and we put onthe prosthetic pieces and the wigs,
00:59:52 and there wasn't really a lot said.
00:59:55 [Steve] I walk into the studio.Scott has the guitar case out.
00:59:59 He has his assault rifle out.He has the shotgun out.
01:00:03 [Mark] The idea wasthat if a cop car came up on us,
01:00:07 we would grab the shotty, jump out, and shoot out the engine,
01:00:10 and disable the cop car.
01:00:13 [Steve] Everything was finalized.
01:00:14 We were ready to get in the vanand take off for Seattle.
01:00:19 We had Mustang as a lookout on the hill.
01:00:22 It's time to do it.
01:00:24 [music fades]
01:00:31 We had been trained specificallyon the Hollywood Bandit.
01:00:37 And when he walkedinto the Lake City branch to rob us,
01:00:40 he walked right past his wanted poster.
01:00:42 Don't panic. This is a robbery.
01:00:46 [Steve] Scott walks in first, setsthe motion of getting everybody in place,
01:00:50 and then Mark comes in,
01:00:52 and he startsdirecting the patrons in there.
01:00:55 [Mark] You're not even afraid.
01:00:56 You've rehearsed it in your mindand you've done it before,
01:00:59 and so you do it.
01:01:01 My worst nightmare. Not one Hollywood, but two, walk through the door.
01:01:06 And shit just hit the fan.
01:01:08 So I started pulling up the bill trap, which sets off an alarm.
01:01:13 Who's the vault teller?
01:01:16 So I said, "Well, that's me."
01:01:18 So we both went back,
01:01:20 and the vault can openwith a special duress combination
01:01:26 that activated another alarm.
01:01:28 [tense music playing]
01:01:30 I wanted every fuckinglaw enforcement agency in Seattle there,
01:01:36 and there as quick as possible.
01:01:39 [Mike] The office was a ghost town.Nobody was there. Lights were out.
01:01:44 [Ellen] I'm at my desk, just trying to tie up some loose ends.
01:01:47 [Mike] We're monitoringthe Seattle police radio
01:01:49 when the tones go out.
01:01:51 And you hear this beep, beep, beep.
01:01:54 They're in there for two minutes, three minutes, five minutes.
01:01:56 I don't hear anything from Mustang.Everything is cool.
01:01:59 And then finally I get the radio.
01:02:01 [dispatch] We have two suspectswho entered the bank with hats on.
01:02:04 Long green coats,
01:02:05 wearing white pancake style makeupon their faces.
01:02:08 [Scott Levine] I hear someone calling inover a radio, "You've been seen."
01:02:15 - He was not calm.- Get in here. Help!
01:02:17 [Scott Levine] He was angry. He wanted in, he wanted out.
01:02:20 He meant business.
01:02:21 [Scott] Let's go, let's go, let's go!
01:02:26 [Scott Levine] I dumped the ProNetinto the bag.
01:02:28 As he has a gun aimed at me,
01:02:31 I'm thinking,"Is he gonna come back and shoot me?"
01:02:35 [keys tapping]
01:02:36 Mike runs by and he says,
01:02:38 "A bank's been hit.I think it's Hollywood."
01:02:40 [Mike] We ran to the car, turn on the lights,
01:02:43 turned on the sirenand took off down Second Avenue.
01:02:47 [Shawn] I leave my officeabout five o'clock,
01:02:48 thinking the day's over with.
01:02:50 I walk into the kitchen of my house,my pager goes off.
01:02:53 I looked down. It was Hollywood.
01:02:56 [Mark] Scott was in the vaultfor a little too long, I thought.
01:03:00 But then here he comesbounding out of that area,
01:03:03 and he had this great big duffle bag, which I took immediately.
01:03:07 I'm grabbing the 1,080,000in this duffle bag.
01:03:11 [tense music playing]
01:03:14 - [sirens wailing]- By this point, we can hear the sirens.
01:03:18 And that's when we noticedthat there were cops everywhere.
01:03:22 Thick as flies.
01:03:24 [sirens continue wailing]
01:03:26 [Steve] Scott yells, "Steve, maybe we should just abort right now."
01:03:28 "Let's just quit."
01:03:30 I say, "What the fuckare you talking about?"
01:03:31 "Let's go! Get this shit done.Get these tracers out."
01:03:34 I was driving that fucking carlike it was stolen.
01:03:36 We were getting updates constantlyfrom the chief dispatcher.
01:03:40 Two suspects armed with handguns,
01:03:43 but I'm trying to focus onthe tracking devices that left the bank.
01:03:46 [Mike] Do we have any signsgoing at all at this time?
01:03:49 [dispatch] Wedgwood and Lake Cityare both hot.
01:03:52 [Shawn] I'm followingthis tracking device.
01:03:53 It's hitting different areas of the city,
01:03:55 different antennas, hot and cold, hot and cold.
01:03:58 I'm trying to follow that signal.
01:03:59 Finally Scott yelled out, "I got one!"
01:04:01 He gave me two $20 bills
01:04:03 that were glued togetherwith the ProNet tag,
01:04:05 and I threw it out the windowand kept going down the street.
01:04:08 [Mike] An officerpops up on the radio and says,
01:04:10 "I'm starting to geta real strong indication here."
01:04:13 I roll up on the scene
01:04:14 and found on the streetthe tracking device discarded.
01:04:18 And immediately, I said, "Oh, shit."
01:04:21 But I knew there's one moretracking unit still out there.
01:04:25 They were back there working. I said,"Biggins, straighten your mind up."
01:04:28 "Get the fucking shit going.Don't be afraid. Just get it done."
01:04:32 [Mark] It was such a panicwith all the police out buzzing around.
01:04:36 We knew that they were hunting us.
01:04:38 We had taken $1,080,000 out of the bank
01:04:42 and it was too difficultto find the tracking devices.
01:04:47 [sirens wailing]
01:04:49 All of a sudden my display lights upand goes, "Poof!" It's game day. Showtime.
01:04:54 [dramatic music playing]
01:04:58 [Steve] Scott said, "Pull over.I want to drive. I know better where...'
01:05:01 I said, "I know where I'm going.Just do what you gotta do."
01:05:03 And he was stubborn.
01:05:04 [Scott] Get over here!
01:05:06 [Steve] And I finally said, "Okay,"and I looked behind my driver's seat,
01:05:09 and there was this pile of money.
01:05:11 And they didn't haveany order to what they were doing,
01:05:13 and I go, "Oh my God. Oh my fucking God."
01:05:17 [Scott] Just drive! What are you doing? Let's go!
01:05:19 I'm still a ways back.I need to get there.
01:05:21 It's my case. I need to be there.
01:05:24 [Mike] I'm listening to the toneand it's going, "Eeee."
01:05:26 And I'm following the display
01:05:28 and it's guiding me intowards this white van.
01:05:31 And I shut off all my lights
01:05:33 and I'm just following the display
01:05:34 right towards the rear endof this Chevy van.
01:05:38 I could see there was condensationon the back windows.
01:05:42 [Ellen] And we could see lightsthrough the back window.
01:05:45 It looked very odd.
01:05:47 So we knewthey were scouring through the money.
01:05:51 I said, "Radio,we're gonna be doing a felony car stop."
01:05:53 [Mike] We're gonna have to doa felony stop here.
01:05:55 I'd like to have more units.
01:05:58 [Steve] And so Scott, as he pulls up,we're on a little knoll,
01:06:01 he pulled up to the street to turn left.
01:06:03 And as he turned left, I saw the cop cars.
01:06:05 Three cop cars behind us.
01:06:08 [Mike] The van coasted to a stopagainst the curb.
01:06:11 As I was getting out of the carand drawing my pistol and going on target,
01:06:16 I realized that the suspectwas already out of the van.
01:06:21 The police have always said we shot first. It didn't happen that way.
01:06:24 They were the ones that ambushed usand began shooting at us.
01:06:27 Meyers' mouth is moving again,so he's obviously lying.
01:06:30 Let me tell you this.Let me tell you this.
01:06:34 I could see, along the driver's side door,a silhouette,
01:06:39 and it was dark, but I could see they had a rifle.
01:06:43 And I saw the rifle come down on me.
01:06:46 [Ellen] I didn't see it.
01:06:48 I... I could only seethrough the front windshield.
01:06:50 So I never saw anybody get out of the van.
01:06:55 [Steve] The reason for those gunswasn't to have a shootout with the cops.
01:06:58 It was to disarm the vehicle.
01:07:00 No. That rifle was pointed right at me.
01:07:03 Everything that I was taughtwas kicking in.
01:07:06 He went down to take aim at me,
01:07:09 and I thought, "Oh, shit."
01:07:10 And for some reasonthe rifle was not firing.
01:07:13 And then,"click, click, click." Three clicks.
01:07:16 I go, "Oh my God."
01:07:18 Suddenly the cops started shootinginto the back of the van.
01:07:23 I could tell my roundswere going through the back door.
01:07:25 [Mark] All I remember is getting hitby a bullet, and getting knocked over.
01:07:30 Suddenly, my left armjust starts flying in front of my face.
01:07:33 "They fucking shot my arm off! They fucking shot my arm off!"
01:07:37 I'm screaming.
01:07:38 And then a little bit further up,Scott stops again and gets a shotgun.
01:07:42 When we get to that second location,a firefight really ensues.
01:07:46 As I was getting out of the carto draw down on the van again,
01:07:50 I heard three of the loudest booms.
01:07:52 [gunshots]
01:07:54 [Ellen] There are bulletswhizzing by my head.
01:07:57 All I could see was glass breaking.
01:08:00 I didn't have my body armor, and I am in the middle of a shitstorm.
01:08:06 I'm trying to communicatewith the FBI office.
01:08:09 I'm telling 'em, "Shots fired."
01:08:13 [Mike] The van takes off again.
01:08:15 [Steve] My left armis just floating in the air.
01:08:17 Biggins is shot in the abdomen.
01:08:19 Blood everywhere.
01:08:21 And then suddenlythe van comes to a thud. Boom.
01:08:23 [van crashes]
01:08:27 As I lay in the back of the van,Scott runs off.
01:08:30 I'm thinking,"This is what we always spoke about."
01:08:32 We were all in this on our own.
01:08:35 [Mike] As I was runningtowards the vehicle,
01:08:37 I'm seeing a silhouette of a bodyrunning south in an alley.
01:08:43 [Steve] The wipers were going,it was still in gear,
01:08:46 and Biggins is not saying a word,
01:08:47 so I don't knowif he's alive or if he's dead.
01:08:50 And Scott's gone
01:08:51 and all I could hearwere all the cops yelling,
01:08:54 "He's gone. He's running over there."
01:08:55 "Shoot that motherfucker!Kill him! Kill him!"
01:08:59 I went to the alley and I... I stopped.
01:09:01 I thought, "Don't go down this alley. This is what we call the Fatal Funnel.
01:09:05 At that point I realized I should back offand go back to the van
01:09:08 where other officershad two suspects down.
01:09:12 And I saw this white maledown on the ground handcuffed.
01:09:14 I said, "Who are you? Are you Hollywood?"
01:09:16 And he says, "No. He ran down the alley."
01:09:19 I said, "Shoot me, son of a bitch. You were doing it a minute ago."
01:09:22 "Just shoot me.Kill me, get it over with."
01:09:24 He said, "Don't worry about it.The courts will take care of your ass."
01:09:28 When he told me to shoot him, I said,"No. You're not getting out of this one."
01:09:31 "We beat you at your game."
01:09:35 [Steve] I didn't want to go to prison.
01:09:36 I mean, at that point nothing mattered.Life was over as far as I was concerned.
01:09:41 And suddenly, the fearand the pain and all that goes away,
01:09:44 and I looked in the vanand I saw this pile of money
01:09:47 and all the bullet holesthat the cops put in the van
01:09:49 were like laser beams of light.
01:09:53 And suddenly, this beautiful divine musiccame into my head.
01:09:56 I'd never heard earthly music like it.
01:10:00 And the money becamealmost like this talisman of...
01:10:04 "What is it? It's a bunch of paper.Who gives a shit?"
01:10:07 "Who does what people do
01:10:09 for this stupid stuffthat has no meaning, really?"
01:10:13 [ethereal music playing]
01:10:19 [Mike] The Fire Departmentwas at the scene treating Biggins,
01:10:22 and he was motionlesslike he was dead on the ground.
01:10:25 As I was looking at him, the firefighterlooked up at me and he went...
01:10:29 He gave me a thumbs down. I thought,"Oh, shit. I just killed somebody."
01:10:33 I took a deep breath and I said to myself,"This is something I never thought about."
01:10:39 I'd been in one previous shooting, but I was not in a shooting like this.
01:10:43 This was a shootout.
01:10:47 [Mark] Outside of the van,I was in and out of consciousness.
01:10:51 I remember Mike Maganopening one of my eyelids,
01:10:54 checking to see if I was living or dead.
01:10:57 I remembered having a sense of reliefthat it's finally over.
01:11:02 I can let it go now.I don't have to live like this anymore.
01:11:10 [reporter 1] The two men who were shotwere taken into custody
01:11:13 and then taken to the hospital.
01:11:14 One man remains at large.
01:11:16 [reporter 2] Dozens of officers,FBI agents, K-9 units,
01:11:19 even the SWAT teamwere called in to look for the fugitive.
01:11:22 Especially if somebody'sstill on the loose, that's a scary thing.
01:11:26 They could be anywhere.
01:11:29 [Shawn] I follow the ambulancedown to Harborview Hospital.
01:11:33 I would deal with the crime scene later.I need to talk to Steve
01:11:36 and find out who elsewe were looking for that night.
01:11:39 This is it. I'm not putting up with thisanymore. This has gotta be the closure.
01:11:44 [Steve] In the waiting roomin the hospital,
01:11:46 Shawn Johnson asked me questions.
01:11:49 And if you can imagine me being shot upand I'm in a situation, here we are,
01:11:53 Scott's on the loose,I don't know if he's dead or alive,
01:11:57 Biggins might die.
01:11:59 Your mind is not clear.
01:12:01 So I'm trying to protect myself.
01:12:05 After two hours,Steve Meyers finally tells me
01:12:07 that the person I'm looking foris Scott Scurlock.
01:12:10 He said Scott Scurlock is Hollywood.
01:12:13 [dispatch] Seattle Police and Fire 19.
01:12:15 [man] Yeah, I know they're doing a searchin our neighborhood.
01:12:18 - [dispatch] Yeah.- [man] Somebody just pounded on our door.
01:12:21 [woman 1] There is a canoewith a tarp over it.
01:12:23 [dispatch] Uh-huh.
01:12:24 [woman 1] I don't knowif anybody should check it.
01:12:26 [woman 2] I didn't see anybody,but I'm thinking that, um, under my deck
01:12:29 would be a good hiding place.
01:12:31 I keep hearing that the officersare going door-to-door
01:12:35 throughout the nightand throughout the day,
01:12:37 trying to find some lead.
01:12:39 Nothing is turning up.
01:12:40 [woman 3] I'm just wondering, in my areathere's police all over and helicopters...
01:12:44 [dispatch] Right, you need to stay inside, ma'am,
01:12:46 and, uh, try not to tie upthe emergency lines with calls.
01:12:50 When I learned that Hollywood had escaped,
01:12:52 I was angered because so much workhad gone in to try to apprehend him.
01:12:56 The only word that kept comingto my mind is, "Fuck. Really?"
01:12:59 Hollywood was right there. How did he get away?
01:13:04 [suspenseful music playing]
01:13:09 [Mike] For the next several hours,I was walking around with nervous energy
01:13:13 when my pager went off.
01:13:15 [man] I think that bank robber might behiding in my camper in the backyard.
01:13:20 [dispatch] And what makes you think that?
01:13:21 [man] I saw somebody's in thereand it's all locked up
01:13:24 and nobody's supposed to be in there.
01:13:26 It was my old partner and he said to me,
01:13:29 "They have your suspect corneredright near the shooting scene."
01:13:33 [dispatch] Could you tellif it was male or female?
01:13:35 [man] No, I just saw some dark hair.
01:13:38 - [dispatch] Okay. How long ago?- [man] I just came in, right now.
01:13:43 [Mike] The officersare dispatched to the camper.
01:13:46 They're pounding on the camper, trying to see who's inside.
01:13:49 So they bust the windowand spray in pepper spray.
01:13:52 And a moment laterthey hear a single gunshot.
01:13:54 [gunshot]
01:13:55 [Mike] The officersfire back into the camper.
01:13:58 - [gunshots]- [smashing glass]
01:14:06 I was told that 76 roundshad been fired into the camper
01:14:09 by officers who were at the scene.
01:14:14 [David] Good evening.
01:14:15 Thanksgiving has been interruptedfor dozens of families.
01:14:17 It's a police standoff,
01:14:19 and the suspect may bethe bank robber known as Hollywood.
01:14:22 [reporter] Right now,Hollywood the bank robber,
01:14:24 one of the luckiest, most prolific in the country,
01:14:27 looks like his luck has run out.
01:14:30 [tense music playing]
01:14:32 [Mike] As I was arriving,
01:14:34 Seattle policewas getting there simultaneously
01:14:36 with their armored vehiclesand setting up a command post.
01:14:39 [Shawn] We had helicopters. We had armored vehicles.
01:14:43 There were probably a couple of hundredlaw enforcement officers there that day.
01:14:46 I'd never seen such a huge response.
01:14:48 This is Thanksgiving Day.
01:14:50 The whole city is at homewith their families
01:14:53 and able to watch what's happening on TV.
01:14:57 Not only doesthe entire neighborhood come out,
01:14:59 but if you live near that neighborhood, you come out.
01:15:02 People come to see what is happening,
01:15:04 especially when somethingthat's almost like a movie
01:15:07 is so close to their homes.
01:15:08 [David] I mean,a quiet North Seattle neighborhood,
01:15:12 and you have hundreds of police, the SWAT team.
01:15:17 All this happening on Thanksgiving.
01:15:19 A Thanksgivingthat nobody's going to forget.
01:15:21 Our last of our guests were leaving
01:15:24 and I got a callfrom my Aunt Helen who lives in Seattle,
01:15:27 and she was hysterical.
01:15:29 [reporter] Our top story...
01:15:30 [Suzanne] It was all over the Seattle newsthat there was this police shootout
01:15:34 with this bandit named Scott Scurlock,
01:15:36 and there's a SWAT teamaround this little trailer
01:15:40 in this lady's backyard.
01:15:42 And then I, at that point, sat down
01:15:46 and just said... [exhales] "Whoa. Whoa."
01:15:50 It was just so mind-blowing
01:15:53 to find out that he's been robbing banksfor five years.
01:15:58 [reporter 1] People areout of their homes,
01:16:00 their Thanksgiving disruptedby this, uh, police manhunt
01:16:03 that has been going on now
01:16:05 for more than 24 hoursin this neighborhood.
01:16:07 [reporter 2] Police and FBI agentshave been in standoff mode,
01:16:10 guns drawn, and negotiators in place.
01:16:13 [David] The standoff is still underway.
01:16:15 We know that shots have been fired.
01:16:17 They've been banging on the door. They've tried to contact him. They can't.
01:16:22 They wanted this to endin the way they wanted it to end.
01:16:24 They weren't gonna take any chances.
01:16:28 [Shawn] And after two hours of no responsewe decided to make entry into the camper.
01:16:32 [tense music playing]
01:16:36 [Shawn] I walk in with the Tactical Team.
01:16:40 We found a body underneath the table.
01:16:43 I had a picture with me. I look down.
01:16:45 [tense music continues]
01:16:49 Scott.
01:16:50 At that point, I knew that it was...We had him.
01:16:54 And turned out that he had killed himself.
01:16:56 That first shot the officers heardwas him killing himself.
01:17:05 [reporter] Good evening.
01:17:06 A suspected bank robber who died yesterdayduring a standoff with police
01:17:10 apparently killed himself.
01:17:11 [David] Scott Scurlock, who police dubbed Hollywood,
01:17:14 was found dead in a camper last night...
01:17:15 [Steve] I woke up the next morningin the hospital and the TV was going
01:17:19 and the news was carpeted with us,
01:17:23 and my name and Scott Scurlockfrom Olympia, Washington, deceased.
01:17:29 A self-inflicted wound.
01:17:32 And, uh, I kind of looked and I just go...
01:17:37 "Thank God," you know.I just said, "Thank God."
01:17:41 The shootout was the end.
01:17:43 Not only the end of our endeavors, but the end of a certain life that I had.
01:17:50 We were like two comets that came together
01:17:53 and we met up and we started flyingthrough the fucking universe
01:17:57 and suddenly, boom! It's all busted up in one second.
01:18:00 It's gone.
01:18:06 [Ellen] I feel like this episodetested me in every possible way.
01:18:11 I was thinking about my kidswhen the shooting started,
01:18:15 and wondering, you know,am I doing the right thing
01:18:17 by doing this jobwhen there's a lot of other jobs
01:18:20 I could be doing in the FBI?
01:18:22 [somber music playing]
01:18:25 [Mike] A day doesn't go bywhere you don't think about it.
01:18:30 My only question to him would probably be,"Why did you take your life?"
01:18:36 And I'll quote Mark Twain,
01:18:37 and Mark Twain saidthat he would never wish death upon a man,
01:18:41 but he's read some obituarieswith great pleasure.
01:18:46 [Shawn] The major regret I havein this investigation
01:18:48 is the fact I never gotto sit down with Scott
01:18:51 and talk to him face-to-face, man-to-man.
01:18:56 If I had been in the vehicle that night,in front of that pursuit line,
01:18:59 would I have done what Mike did, shoot into the back of that van? No.
01:19:02 There's always another day to catch him.Seriously, there's always another day.
01:19:06 [somber music continues]
01:19:09 [camera clicking]
01:19:13 [Suzanne] It was heartbreakingfor the whole family.
01:19:15 It was almost like a...like a double whammy of... of,
01:19:18 "Whoa. He was doing what?He ended up here?"
01:19:23 My father adored Scottand was heartbroken.
01:19:28 Not only that we lost him.We also lost who we thought he was.
01:19:32 [Scott's father] I missbeing able to love him.
01:19:35 I miss being loved by him.
01:19:38 And he really genuinely loved me.
01:19:41 I don't thinkthere's any question about that at all.
01:19:43 And I loved him dearly. No matter what he was like.
01:19:47 The number of secrets he hadabout the life he had been leading
01:19:50 were so huge
01:19:52 that if he had walked out of that trailer, put his hands in the air, and surrendered,
01:19:58 he would have had to have facedhis entire world.
01:20:02 And I honestly believethat the last decade of his life,
01:20:06 he was making choices that he knewwere gonna come down to a dead end.
01:20:14 [Steven] I received a call.
01:20:16 "Scotty's died.He died in a bank robbery."
01:20:19 My mind immediately went into,
01:20:22 "He was trying to stop the bank robbery. He was being the hero."
01:20:25 And so I asked the question. "Well, how did he die in the bank robbery?"
01:20:28 And the answer came backthat he was the bank robber.
01:20:32 It felt like my heartand my brain exploded.
01:20:35 [Steve] When I was in prison,Mustang visited me four or five times.
01:20:39 She would always come on the anniversary, the day before Thanksgiving.
01:20:43 She'd always think of Scott.
01:20:45 And I got a letter from her sister, said that she'd committed suicide.
01:20:50 She just couldn't bear the factthat all that she'd been involved with
01:20:53 over the years with Scott and me,
01:20:55 and that suddenly he's deadand I'm in prison for all these years,
01:20:59 and that she is walking free.
01:21:02 It's like, she's not walking freein her own soul.
01:21:04 I don't think she believedshe was walking free.
01:21:08 [T.J.] Steve Meyers, who used to go to Shakespeare plays
01:21:11 with my husband and I.
01:21:13 He's going to prison.
01:21:14 We have Mark Biggins.
01:21:16 Sensitive guy. Poet, guitar player.
01:21:20 He's going to prison. Blows my mind.
01:21:24 People always say,"Oh, you knew the guy in the Treehouse?"
01:21:26 "You knew Hollywood?"I'd go, "Hey, I didn't know Hollywood."
01:21:30 "I knew Scott Scurlock."
01:21:34 [Mark] Scott and Ihad several discussions about,
01:21:37 "What are you gonna do if we get caught?"
01:21:41 And he would always, always say,
01:21:43 "I'm not going to prison.I'm gonna head for the white light."
01:21:49 I've read the victim impact statements
01:21:51 and some bank tellers and some customersin the bank were... were truly traumatized
01:21:57 by the... the whole experience, and that I regret sincerely.

01:22:07 [T.J.] Scott had a T-shirtthat said "Live Free or Die."
01:22:10 And I think he spent a lot of yearsfiguring out how to live free.
01:22:15 But in the end,
01:22:18 he died and he wasn't free.
01:22:25 [Steve] After his death,
01:22:27 the Treehouse diedwithin a year, a year and a half.
01:22:29 It crumbled and fell.
01:22:31 I mean, this tree house and Scottwere one soul, inseparable.
01:22:37 And Scott's death was its death.
01:22:40 And it had to be that way.
01:22:45 [Mark] After being released from prison,I went back to the Treehouse.
01:22:50 It looked like a shipwreck.
01:22:52 It was just a pile of timber.
01:22:55 And I took some of Scott's ashesand spread them and said goodbye, finally.
01:23:03 [Scott] I have just finishedreading my whole diary
01:23:05 and it seems like a thing of the past.
01:23:09 I feel like a completely different person.
01:23:12 So many things have happened to me
01:23:14 that there's no wayI could write them all down.
01:23:19 My mind seems to be farther than my bodyfrom the earth below.
01:23:24 I feel excited but scared.
01:23:30 It is a time of new beginnings.
